Wondering if these numbers match. Something I don't understand.

Chassis    ALH01747?M    8/74

VIN:          8D69ZDJ445613H

Body         445613M

Saw this on a sold L34 on Australia Muscle Car Sales.

Reason I ask is, the chassis build is several hundred before mine and yet the body number is later than mine.

It's a little strange, but a couple of hundred cars isn't that much of a difference.

I'm only guessing here but I could easily see them holding L34's off the line and running them through in batches too?

I can't remember which way around it is but I recall that either the chassis number or body number comes with the shell, and whichever the other is gets added at the other end of the line, or something like that, so if a vehicle got delayed on the line for any reason the numbers tend to slide apart?

I just thought it odd and was wondering why. FYI the chassis stamped into the body for mine shows it was number 17634 build. The one above was body number 1747?. Couldn't make out the last number and there was no photo of the actual chassis stamp on the body and the one on the tag was really blurry. That made it being built around 160 odd before mine.  However the body number on the tags puts it 40 cars later than mine.

That being said the photos of the car itself show some differences to an all 'original' L34.  There is a big gap between the front indicators and spoiler indicating a different nosecone.

There is no chrome 'smiley' strip at the lower end of the nosecone and I can't see any of the lugs that were factory welded to mount the smiley strip and where are the TORANA letters?.

All of this might just mean it's been in a prang and the front replaced.

Looking further it doesn't have the original mounting washers for the flares. These went over the edge of the flare and onto the rubber mounting strip and were clearly visible.

It does not have the grey golfball inserts in the seats that were standard to the L34 yet the add says 'original trim'.

To me the scuff plates look wrong and are a dull metalic look.

The spare wheel retaining nut is wrong.  The boot area has carpet and lining around the arches.

Little things maybe but when added together it's far from an original survivor and as the add says 'unmolested'.

On top of that I reckon you'd have a field day if you could have a close up look under the bonnet.

In saying all of that I'm not doubting it's an L34 just doubting that it's an unmolested one as advertised.

Yeah lots of things get changed or replaced over the space of 43 years, you have to remember too that back in the 80s these things didn't hold so much importance as they do nowadays.

I suppose you could equate them to a 10 year old HSV or similar today, heaps of young dickheads changing out parts on them with no thought of keeping everything original, geez I was swapping engines and what have you every other weekend back in the old HQ days.

In fact the only true survivors would've been the grandpa cars, and even they tend to get passed down to the 'hoon' grandkids eventually.

The other thing is that information on what's "proper" and what isn't tends to be kept close to the chest, it's a double-edged sword though, you don't want to make it too easy for people to build fakes, but then it's difficult to find accurate info if you are trying to restore a genuine article.
