At the zenith of GMH production in Australia, there were assembly plants in the capital cities of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Steel for the manufacture of our Toranas and indeed other Holden models could have come from BHP in Newcastle, Port Kembla or Whyalla.

Today, only the Elizabeth Holden plant remains and steel is now only made in small quantities at the BHP Port Kembla works.

And of course, Elizabeth is to close its doors in the coming weeks. It follows the demise of Mitsubishi, Ford and Toyota in this country (makes you wonder what will be left to manufacture in this country?). VALE the Australian motoring industry.

So it might well be a prudent time to remember and reflect, especially in terms of our beloved Holden.

Are we then able to upload pictures of Holden plants, the assembly lines, the staff, Holden models being assembled etc etc. Of course, pictures of Toranas being made, even better.

A final pictorial reflection perhaps?

We will remember them.

Sad days indeed. A new Holden will never really be a proper Holden anymore to me.

Holden haven’t built anything that’s inspired me for 40 years. *

* I have secret love for the 2 door commodores so they’re excluded.

I think that the government's plural, all in general need a huge kick up the clacker for what's been allowed to happen within the car industry, I wouldn't just blame the unions, but a lot of the manufacturers were setting up over seas, China ect, over 5 years ago including ford. Bottom line is profit margin IS the only thing that they're interested in. The car industry is dead in this country. I do believe holden will be cactus in Australia by 2020. They've made some crap decisions in the last few years, the company we all loved died at the announcement of the closure, it went down permanently from that date, never to return. Many people are angry with the close of the car industry & rightly so !

IMO it was a combination of Govt policy (Keating and Button got the ball rolling), Unions, financial forces, Company Management and the consumer that led to the demise of vehicle manufacturing in Australia.

GM-H has always needed export markets to remain viable but when GM USA stole the Middle East market to boost their own viability (GM knew then it would spell the demise of Holden's manufacturing) it was the final straw.

Swan song - at least a Holden took line honours at Bathurst today.
Again, we will remember.

At the zenith of GMH production in Australia, there were assembly plants in the capital cities of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Don't forget Perth in that lot. You can also add New Zealand, South Africa, Philippines, Korea and Indonesia. (These are just the assembly plants. They were exported to another 50 odd countries.)

I found it sad that when the Toyota Altona plant closed down last week, I didn't hear any mention of it on the radio that day. 2500 jobs gone in one day!

Hopefully repurposed, their building in Marrickville, Sydney is still around, there's a lot of arty farty warehouses in the area now.
