Hello all.

My question is can you register a LX hatch if you have no id plates and no chassis number?

Looks like chassis number panel has been replaced at some stage.

No chassis number might get you into strife.

Without a chassis number you will be referred to the local authority for an ID inspection at a guess.

Just make sure it doesn't have a police number issued somewhere else in the engine bay.

As above, you'll end up being sent to the police who will of course want to inspect it and establish the car's history to make sure it's not stolen. I've done this before myself and depending on the copper it may be a quick look over the car, or it might be impounded for forensic examination, which could take months.

Usually you can register a car without a compliance plate if the car has been previously registered, however without a stamped chassis number I'm not sure how you could prove that? Even if you have number plates and rego papers, who's to say it's the same car?

Even if you receive a "police number" I reckon you will still have trouble registering it as it was obviously never registered before with that new number? Bureaucratically speaking that means nobody has ever certified it compliant with the ADRs.

You may end up having to get an engineer's report to certify the car, similar to a personally imported vehicle?

Cheers guys.

Should add car is a shell at present and rusty. Was going to carry out a uc / lx conversion using this body for panels.

Was an after thought that to save some effort to rebuild it using the uc as doner instead.

Good call I reckon, the most valuable part I can see there would be the lower dash fascia if it isn't broken.

Will likely always be worth more as a repaired LX than a converted UC assuming both are doable with what you have.

Yes that's true but is an LX with no tags and no chassis number worth more than a legit UC?

And is it worth gambling tens of thousands of dollars rebuilding something you may not be able to register when it's done?

You could just pull the tags and chassis number off a uc and say that its a LX with no tags or chassis number, so im going to predict that no, a LX with no tags or chassis number will not be worth more than a legit UC.

Could that also fall within the category of a kit car and he has to engineer it to current ADR's?
