Morning, Evening, Ladies, Gents...

I give you the second most rustiest hatch ive seen/owned. I bought this early 2013 after a tip off from another member, Ken / Niterida. Was from Geraldton WA I think. Rang the guy and bought it sight unseen aside from a few pictures from Ken. I was under no illusions about the amount of rust in the thing though and always planned for it to be a long term one day project.

Well I finally got it moved to my new place in Tasmania. Don't get too excited though. I don't expect to fly through with progress and complete a 12month build. Im not even totally sure what im going to do with it. IE A9X Replica, Modified to the max, street car, race car, show car etc.

Its a Sunbird so im pretty free to do whatever I want without worrying about de-valuing it haha.

Plans for the moment are to strip it right down to parts and bare metal, Get it in epoxy so there will at least be some hatch left when I do want to get stuck into it. My Sedan build took 14 years so If I can do this in 10 years its an improvement! Although If you count from 2013 im already 6+ years into it!

So its easier to list the places that don't have (as much) rust:

-Roof is actually pretty dam good except a few spots around the windows
-Bonnet
-Back half of the floor
-Engine bay

Drivers A-Pillar and both sills need complete re-working!

Anyway here is some pics of how it is now (basically as I got her, maybe its got a little worse since then) you can see my attempt at slowing the rust by spraying cavity wax in all the rust holes

That's cool Clint.....yep you're got your work cut out, but I've seen much worse. Definitely repairable and should make an awesome base for whatever theme you decide to go with.

A lot of work but if time not an issue very doable. That A pillar is going to need heaps of work or replacement. Good luck with the project

Sweet. All looks fixable.

Should be able to pick up a decent sedan centre cut (either UC or LX) to do a lot of the floor and A pillars, around the firewall etc.

I would have it. A pillar nasty but rest looks OK How much is surface rust? A lot from pics doesn't look too deep. Best part you have the right console. If you weren't so far away I might have been able to cut the A pillar section off of a sedan wreck in the paddock.

Also, siiiick fashion pack combo. Shame it's totally fucked haha.

Is that paint factory? I only just noticed that Sunbirds didn't have the SL blackouts out to the brightwork around the side windows, and that the B-Pillar vent was painted body-colour?

I think it might be factory paint, there is no signs of multiple colors layers on the edge of the rust. Not that ive looked that hard though.

I removed the front seats, pulled the carpet and underlay out along with about 5kg of rat poo!

Found $2.00 too! so ill add that to the build budget :D

The rear foot well is actually pretty dam good! abit of surface rust, a couple dents and that's it. The front foot wellnot so great.. Floor pan, inner sills etc rusted through... Can actually see right through to the front wheel on the drivers side :)

Just a matter of making replacement sections and welding them in one by one.

You're not going to use donor sections for those areas? I wouldn't be making it all from scratch personally.

Pretty undesirable donor sections, too. Should be quite easily sourced.

Viper,

that may seem simple to you, but I'm having a panic attack just looking at the photo's.

Regards Mando.
