Hi just after a little advice here .
Can l put a modified VK 5.0 engine in a 1/78 Hatch ? My main concern is pollution issues come registration time. I'm sure it's known as a black engine, I have the original 253 red motor as well .

Yes you can. They are not that much different in emissions requirements. If it is a 308, unless it’s a HDT one it will be a VT prefix, and VT engines started mid 1978 under the same AFR27A emissions as your 1/78 hatchback. In fact a 1/78 5.0L and a 6-7/78 5.0L are pretty much identical bar a slightly bigger piston dish on the Commodore one dropping compression from 9.7 to 9.4. So unless whomever is registering it knows their engines they won’t know the difference anyway. And even if they do the emissions gear is pretty much the same.
If it is a 304 it’s prefix will be VA, VB or VC in which case it is easier to know where it originated. Even so, still not much different emissions wise.

Thanks yel327 for your info .
I have a low km VK engine and dont want the added expense of sourcing a red motor , only want the block and will bolt on all new gear to get it up to scratch .

Is it a 308 or 304?

To be honest “all new gear” will probably see you with more grief compliance wise than using a whole VK engine!

308
So I will have to rebuild it as is ? Can I squeeze 350- 400 hp out of this engine without adding on anything aftermarket ?

Find out what the registration process is in your State to see if not having compliant pollution equipment is a roadblock before you do anything with it. If it has to be Engineered you may have a problem if the engine doesn’t present as compliant.
Others here will help you better with 308 power. If I wanted that sort of power and had to be compliant I’d use an injected engine and stroke it as part of the rebuild process.
Beware that a VK 308 is a manual block so your gearbox choices are limited when you are talking 400hp.

Thanks for the info again, might have to register it with the standard engine then pull it to rebuild .99% of cars I've seen at show meets do not have pollution equipment on them .Are they all deemed illegal ?

I guess it depends on the State and who rego checks them. I know for my HK in NSW, for it to pass Engineering without later emissions gear I have to use an early block, which I am. With an ADR27A LX you have to at least comply with ADR27A, in NSW at least, and especially if Engineering it.

Your car won’t need engineering.

Certainly never been a problem in Vic with later engines in Toranas and missing bits of pollution gear. As long it doesn’t look like a dunger and isn’t too loud you should be ok?

Maybe some of the NSW guys can chip in?

If it is just a rego blue slip in NSW no real dramas. But if Engineering you’d have issue. The engine may not need Engineering, but if you were fitting a 5spd, 9” and bigger brakes you would, and the report would cover the engine too. My Engineer is pretty practical, you’d get away with say any QT as long as it had the right external emissions gear, but not a VJ or VU etc.
