I've always used the vinyl spray dye for interior surfaces including hard plastic, seems to work fine and quite resilient.

Make sure you give the console a good wash, wax and grease then plastic adhesion promoter before colour.

I’ll look and see if there are mentions of grille paint colour. I might have it for HQ or HJ. Is it that hard to find a black HZ grille though? I used to have heaps but I think I chucked all the HX and HZ ones that weren’t off a Statesman away. I reckon I must have had a dozen at one stage, all would have come off 4 headlight fronts as that is what I used to make up to sell. I only kept Statesman and HJ ones I think.

Wow. I’ve walked past really good HZ grilles at swap meets for under $100, to me that is twice what they are worth! I’ll have to look closer next time. I bought a mint HJ one last swap meet I went to for $100 complete with GTS badge.

I’m talking black ones, not normal ones. Most of the ones I used to get were black as I used to buy fronts of HZ Sandman and GTS wrecks as well as Statesmans. When I used to make up fronts and sell them the most popular grilles were always HX-HZ Statesman (not SLE though), HJ Statesman and HJ normal. No one wanted HX or HZ, that is why I had a heap left. Sometimes people wanted nice HZ Premier ones but rarely.
I’ll look in my shed and see if there are any good black ones left I might as well sell them if they are that valuable, I’d never use a HZ one anyway so no use to me. I chucked all the ones that were in an old garden shed when a tree fell on it, but I think I had all the mint stuff in the shed somewhere. Will check.

Yeah the HX ones were poofy to say the least. Some how my HX van had grey plastic HK grille when I got it with 77000km on it. Painted it black of course. Dulux enamel

:spoton: Acrylic is the way to go to get that original finish look on ABS plastics.

Read my last pm's to you Gene, if freight wasn't so ridiculous, I'd think about doing up some colours for sale.

Then show us how good it comes up mate. Gary.

I had chamois mixed up by the paint shop. So if you can get the code. You should be able to do the same. I wondered at the time if the thinners actually melted the plastic a little so the paint impregnated into the console?

This is the culprit
Next question whats the best way to patch this was thinking cutting a piece out of another console and plastic welding
thoughts yes / no
And before you ask yes the other console is a parts donor (broken )
All sanded and plastic primed ready for colour

Put the ashtray back in it to fill the hole.
