Hi all. Years ago I used to run a Holden 6 in a FED on methanol without cooling/water/radiator.
Has anyone done similar using E85 fuel or does it need cooling?

Only know what I know...my son's Twin turbo HSV GTS was , at one stage going onto E85.
From memory all it needed was overly large injectors, oversize fuel pump, computer remap. There was no talk of water.

From memory (Y12 and Uni Chemistry) Methanol uses a lot more heat when it undergoes a phase change, which means it runs far cooler. Great for blown applications as an inter cooler is often not required. Denatured ethanol is somewhere between gasoline and methanol, and when only 85% even less so.
I know when I was a kid and had 90/110 Honda trike engines bored and stroked to 250 and 310cc they had to be run on methanol to keep them cool as they were air cooled.

E85 uses 30% more that petrol and Methanol 110% to reach stoich, Ethanol is very much different to Meth, and the tuning window is very large( methanol can be run massively rich with no loss of power)E85 or E100 still very much needs cooling and if using forced induction intercooling.

When E85/E100 first became popular there was Sooo many misinformed people who would say Ethanol is as good or almost as good as Methanol, its not ! Using EGT's and pushing turbo combinations I was very disappointed with the in cylinder cooling effect.

Thanks. I will run it on the test stand and see how hot it gets. Dropped jets in the methanol carby so flow should be ok. Its been hard getting stuff done in lockdown but it should be ready to start once i can get access to a lathe and finish off the crank trigger.

Finally got the engine fired up. It did get hot but don’t think as quickly as on petrol. Definitely heated faster than methanol so I am now working on adding a radiator to the car.
