Hi all I am thinking of selling my 4/73 XU1 and I cant decide to sell at auction or private sale.

The  engine has just been rebuilt less than 100 klms gearbox and diff done about 1500 klms ago paint and trim good.

Any advice would great.

thanks

Ian

Hi, I have just sent you a PM,

In saying that they do appear to be getting good money at Auction.

Myself personally I would be apprehensive leaving something so valuable with an Auction House.

Perhaps someone like AustralianMuscleCars is a good compromise.

I think a lot of specialist cars are also sold word of mouth.

Cheers, John.

Most "reputable" auctioneers will photograph all tags and engine numbers.

If you are not prepared for that, sell privately. :)

A couple of years ago we decided to move a Caterham Super 7 clubman on. If you want to be entertained by mental patients out on day release, then advertise on social media , if you want to actually sell the vehicle then speciality auction house is the way to go.The fees on sale are fairly steep, however the process becomes quite painless because someone other than you will be dealing with the "experts in the model" the rivet counters, dreamers and wankers that seem to crawl out from under their rocks when a special interest car comes up for sale. One such drone I had to contend with is an ex high ranking official of a motorsport body that was having a mid life crisis.

As above, I think the key thing is to somehow distance yourself from the people who are likely to want to look at your car. Sounds a bit strange, as at least some of them are going to be just like you, an enthusiast, and a potential real buyer.

Unfortunately, there will also be the other 999 tossers, pests, no shows when yopu have stayed home to meet them, test pilots, people looking for a friend, potential theives scoping out your place, etc etc.

I sold my LC GTR a year or so ago, and deliberately stored it off site in a secure storage place,  and advertised only on Carsales. Seems to me there is a more genuine type of buyer on there, not sure why?  Just know that I have sold  4 cars on that platform, and normally the 1st or second looker buys it, so it's quick and easy.

The guy who bought it knew what he wanted and bought it on the spot. Done.

Downside? ....not as cheap as fB, but much less than an auction/broker fee, and in my case at least, the storage place had a 1 month minimum rental and the car sold in 2 days. So I had an empty lockup and no chance of a refund.

Had a mate sell a LC GTR on Shannons last week, he said it was a pretty good experience. I think the car was on their site ( physically) for around 6 weeks including the 2 week? online auction. So you need to let your pride and joy be away from home for a while.

Agree Col ,Gene. Not a good idea to have it at your residence while selling with many people coming around viewing, word of mouth through a club is a good idea.
Definately meet at another location.

All the more reason to go through auction, that way the undesirables don't get to see where car is kept, and you won't have the wannabes trying to get a "test drive", the auction house will not let it out of their premises

That car is good enough that it would sell through word of mouth Ian.

I recently sold my Torana on consignment, I went with a local company that I had dealt with a few times. They advertised it FB and apparently had a solid day dealing with 'experts' and low ballers then it sold for over asking minus their commission.

I thank all of you for comments. I can't seem to put a price on it myself so I am leaning towards going to auction.

This car is NOT a perfect xu1 but it is an xu1 and anyone who knows what the car was like when I brought it will understand.

So I think the person who really  wants it should inspect it and check out everything about the car. In  saying all that I now have to

decide which auction company to use .

ANY IDEAS?

thanks Ian

Find a farm clearing sale happening near you and put it on the bill. People gag for this stuff and your overheads will be minimal. They get shared all over facebook, etc. and with the additional exposure here you should be laughing.
Edit. Just give them heaps of photos for before the day. Drive it in on the day and stay with it. Security issues solved.
