Maybe use CRC / WD40 and a scotchbright pad rather than wet and dry or other such abrasive?
After clean up, a squirt with clear to protect it.

Especially with an SL/R 5000 you run the risk of devaluing the car...If a buyer suspects the engine number is dodgey (whether it is or isn't) they aren't as likely to pay as high.

The thing is, you can't get the correct stamp to do the job, so it's going to look dodgy. Romomos suggestion is the best, or perhaps even a light acid to clean it up then protect it with WD40

All I could advise is make sure you don't get that part decked. A decent engine builder can deck your block without taking the number off. If you are unlucky enough to have bought it like that or have already decked it, well what threeblindmice said, don't expect top dollar. You could restamp it, but it won't look right.

I have never seen a block decked that didn't need restamping.

Really? Well I've had both mine decked and they avoided that area. I guess it comes down to who does it and the care taken. It's hard to find good help these days huh. Places that do hundreds like GEM are in it for the money of getting exchange engines out the door, if you take it to a decent engine builder and request the number not to be removed, they can do it. Considering what some of these cars are worth today, imagine getting your engine back with the number gone.......

the number pad is on the same plane as the deck, either you had your block angle decked, the machinest set up sepciffically not to machine the numbers, leaving a step on the deck or you did not witness the restamping.

It's very simple really, you set up the machine not to machine that area, so you can end up with a small step. I was very luck with both my blocks, they were near perfect so no noticable step, and they were not restamped.

You still have the cast date to go off and the reciept with the engine number from the decking , to get the perfect deck you have to mill it true centre which means taking off the numbers , depending on how deep the stamping is and how much you have removed to aquire to perfect tunnel to deck level you sometimes can get lucky and still retain faint numbers. You can get near to spoton number stamps to holden if you look hard enuff and theres nothing wrong with have the block restamped if you have to...So if anyone one had ideas of restamping a non torana block with a HT number it will and can be found out by ways and means. Just to clean the numbers I d use a 3M disc wizza/gasket remover buff.

The propper and legal way is by getting VP numbers restamped on your block after your original number is gone.

Well thats here in VIC anyway once your number is removed your not allowed to restamp it, allthough that doesnt make it right in many peoples minds it is the law.

Sad but true

you may want to check up on that. mine has been done and i asked the rta. all i needed was i letter from the machine shop saying that the number was removed and restamped in the machining process.

^ That is how it should be, but are all machine shops in an adequately authorititive position to be given that responsibility?
