I try to run a filter on the top hose as it enters the radiator. Particularly after a new engine install. As the photo shows there is often a lot of stuff coughed up. This was from as engine I bought secondhand that had good looking coolant when removed. Sat around for 10months before it was in and running again.
As you can see there is a mix of silicone from my overexuberance, flake rust from the cooling innards and bits of gravel from god knows where (ancient casting sand?)
Many of the fragments are just the right size to block off a rad tube.
This collection is from the first 200km of use.
The filter is made from an old pair of my pantyhose, the thick ugly opaque type.

I've been using one of the tefba ones now for a while and was amazed at how much stuff I got out of it, they aren't the prettiest things in the engine bay but I wouldn't be with out one now.

Everyone bitches about how ugly those ones are, and i agree, but i recon it would be reasonably easy to make one out of alloy.

Might add it to the list of thins to do.

Rexy, last time i tried using a pair of pantyhoes that i aquired one dark night with a full moon, bastard things ended up at the top of the radiator, they stretched.....How do you aoid this?

Cheers.

Hi 76S.L.R,
Nice find, DJ will be happy.
Was thinking that we could replace the thermostat top housing and have an extended version so it is bolted in place and strong with a cap for a cylindrical gauze filter. Dave I

It doesnt matter. I make mine about 4 inches long and it ends up herniating into the top tank. Provides extra flow area and does a beaut job of retaining all the crud.. Never had one develop a hole even after 2 years use.
The beauty is it costs nothing. Very fine filtration compared with the last bought one i saw. If you pick black (and who wouldnt) they are pretty discreet, hardly notice it.

The Tefba style are easier to service than a sock.

I got one of these with my PWR radiator. I'm still not sure where it should go.

I'm guessing in the top rad hose? Folds back under the hose clamp?

Good stuff guys. I have a brand new engine thats going in the next few weeks and will put one of these on it. Question from me is where is the best place to fit it, talking about the tefba filter? That filter looks easy to make, I am sure our maintenance department has a big roll of that type of filter at work, cut to size and bend into shape too easy.

in the top radiador hose, to stop crap from the engine entering the radiator. try and put it in the straightest section of the hose to make it easy

Fit the Tebfa just before the Radiator in the Top Hose, as above put it at a nice straight part of the hose

Did you install it in the straight section of the hose ? I assume that you cut the section out, that is required to be removed ?

Hi,
I cut around 25mm off the hose that fits onto the radiator, as it was kinking.
