i believe this ratio is out there somewhere
and wanting to keep the large salisbury
not interested in going 9 inch
want to have a play with a spare diff housing
and 5 speed box 5th gear being overdriven so it will
still cruise
don't want 3.55 or 3.36
any help appreciated

Can't say I've ever heard of a 3.9 .. but it could exist

Isn't that the ratio that was on the homologation papers but not produced? I think even if there were a couple made for racing you probably won't manage to lay your hands on a set :-(

3.9 banjo are a mix of gears from other ratio sets. I wonder if you could do the same with a 10-bolt? Get the gears lapped, would it work?

They were made I believe for one of the race teams for tracks like Winton. I think there were only something like 30 or so sets made and I know of a couple of people that have them but would be no chance of selling. Is some talk of trying to get some gear sets for the large Salisbury remanufactured for the Group C racers, IF this happens this ratio would probably make it onto the list to get done.

I don't think you will find a set these days.

The only set I ever saw got destroyed in a Group C race a few years ago and I know the owner paid a ridiculous amount for them.

Other option might be to get a Borg Warner centre conversion done?

 Dave
Spoke to a bloke who has a set
Apparently there was 10 sets made by request from PB to run in his car at Winton
He was chasing the edge over the other Torana's and requested they were homologated as an option

Sets were made and the official word came through the day before the race day - PB already had a set in his car for the day and raced with the ratio on that day

Please don't shoot me down fella's -- only going on what i have been told :)

Will ring you Dave with a possible lead

.

Has this been done before ? are we talking removing the axle tubes and putting the torana ones on the cast centre

or changing the internals over , ring gear and pinion etc , would say there would be some neat machining work involved !

They put the Borg Warner internals in the 10-bolt housing. I thought you blokes would be all over it already. It is a mob in Sydney, can't remember the name. Someone here will know who it is that does it.

I thought that was just the 4 spider centre conversion though? Everything is roughly the same size so I guess a gear conversion could be done, but nothing is a straight fit.

It is a conversion. Been thinking, might have been G&J differentials in Dandenong. You may be right though, probably still uses 10 bolt gears, just the BW hemi. So won't help with circa 4:1 gears.

How does one identify such a thing

Rather than picking up small sailsbury/UC ones by mistake ?

Would it be via the number of bolts to mount the crown gear?

10 bolts for large (HQ A9X)

8 bolts for small (bango/UC)
