Does anyone know the part number of the top and bottom bearings in the steering column ( the internal bearings, one just under the steering wheel, one just before the end cap that bolts to the floor)? Does anyone know where in South Australia you can buy replacements?

Go to a bearing shop they should have one and they wont rape your arse like rares do

Thanks fella's,      BUT........ I understand that there are two bearings in the column. What about the lower or bottom bearing, Is that the same as the top or is it this bearing set    http://www.rarespare...roduct=VS15115 . The lower bearing is actually the one I need most for my steering column. It just makes sense to do them both while I'm at it.

 

 

Footnote:-          Your right.............$65 for a bearing, that really is rape, is there anyway to get part or bearing number so I can get it from Consolidated Bearings ( C.B.C )

That looks like bearings for the steering rack not column.

That looks like bearings for the steering rack not column.

This is the LJ column lower bearing to suit console shift models (not 3 on tree).

Great ideas people, I thought the roller bearing I posted a link too were for the steering gear but....,lol.

 

    Has anyone tried that adapter and the later LX roller bearing in their LJ column?  Mine is a floor shift column by the way. I would prefer a roller bearing set up to a bush. 

  

In the column diagram I have they call "the lower bush"  a "bearing", I think that's a bit misleading, don't you.

Kingswood country have the HQ - WB, LH/X UC lower bearing but it's pricey.

Then you'll need the plastic adaptor to mount it in and you'll need to have a sleeve put over the lower end of the LJ steering shaft to increase its diameter from approx 19.5mm to approx 25mm.

Also keep in mind there is a considerable load placed on the end of the LJ steering shaft and bearing by the rubber coupling when turning the steering.

This may not be of any great concern however I wonder if these loads may cause the HQ/LH type bearing to eventually dislodge from its adaptor if used in an LJ with the original type rubber or an aftermarket urethane steering coupling.

 

Another point to consider. Will the HQ/LH bearing adaptor fit straight into the end fo the LJ column jacket or will the end of the jacket or the adaptor need to be modified to suit.

It just occurred to me that it may be possible to use the old bush as a housing for a roller bearing, then you would only have to match the diameter of the shaft closely to a bearing inner diameter as you could drill out the bush to suit the outer diameter of the bearing you choose, provided of course you didn't go so large as to compromise the strength of the inner part of the bush. The picture of the bush I have seen elsewhere on this forum does seem thick enough in the centre to take some enlargement without weakening it substantially.

 

Thoughts anyone?

Needle roller bearing is small in size Ned,

but while on this idea, just make a small nylon bush to fix the size needed, would last another 40 years hey. Dave I

By the time you machine out the centre of the original bearing to accommodate the OD of a 19.5mm ID needle roller bearing there will be nothing left to retain the needle roller bearing.

Not necessarily so Dave.

If one was to have a solid nylon bearing made to the same outer specs of the original bearing then a needle bearing could be easily installed in the centre of it. That's assuming a needle bearing with the correct ID to suit the LJ steering shaft can be obtained.

 

I did look into this a few years ago and came up empty handed on a perfectly correct size needle bearing. The diameter of the end of the steering shaft would have to be increased to suit the needle bearing. Seems like a lot of cost and effort when a new original type nylon bearing (NOS or custom made) should last for decades in a car that isn't driven daily.

only for making the Torana 500 grams heavier Gene



depending how thick it is made, one machined exactly the size and shape of the Original, would be about 150 grams

Can't see why a brass bush made to the right tolerances and fitted in the original bearing wouldn't work.

So Dave and compatriot's , if I understand right, what your saying is basically to machine a small brass ring (with the correct inside diameter) to fit into the centre of the old bush to "pick up the slack" between it and the steering shaft?  What sort of glue would you use to attach it to the bush?

Does anyone know a place in adelaide that could machine a complete new bush in plastic?

Does anyone know a place in adelaide that could machine a complete new bush in brass?

Is there a particular composition of brass that I should use?

I just want to look at all my options, lol,

I would stick a 2" bar of nylon into the lathe chuck, drill and ream the correct size for the steering shaft size, then machine the outside diameter to the correct size, and then part it off at the thickness. There it is done, I just hit it in, in the Torana. Dave I

I have been given a part /item number by rare spares (2819931) for the lower bearing/bush on the column. They have said that it only applies to the LJ not the LC column, I wonder is this what I'm looking for, I thought/ understood that both models had the same lower bearing. Can anyone tell me if they have tried this part and whats really happening here? I want to go in to have a mate ( a suspension set up specialist) to fix my steering column and I was hoping to have all the parts first. My mate has always done a great job with my cars suspension but he's not entirely sure about what is inside my LJ column.

2819931 is the part number for the LJ steering column lower bearing to suit console shift models.

 

Didn't know Rares were doing the LJ lower bearing, can't find it on their website yet so maybe it's a recent addition to their range.

 

Replacing the lower bearing is a piece of piss once you have the flexible coupling assy removed.

 

All that holds it in is a large wire C clip that engages into 3 slots in the end of the column jacket.

Remove the C clip, pull out the old bearing, apply a smear of HTB grease to the steering shaft bearing surface, push in the new bearing, line up the 3 cutouts in the bearing with the slots in the jacket and refit the C clip, refit the flexible steering coupling, job done.
