Hi Al
As above post the new mirrors are not the best ....I was talking with the Rare spares team about a month ago and they told me that they have had a lot of trouble with the mirror /glass coming away from the body ....in other words the glue used to hold in the glass is not the best ....
sometimes you can get a set on Ebay but they sell for nearly the price of a new set and the chrome is pitted

Big Kev

You are correct there was a problem with the glass sticking to the base that's why the are not on the market and are being remade , Your statement of them being not the best is incorrect as they were taken of the market once we found there was a problem and the new ones will be correct.

Bazar

Would you care to explain exactly what is wrong with these because it is had to fix something when you say they are pathetic and complete  rubbish , we would need to know why before we can fix the problem , I might add that we have been selling these since 2003 and have sold many thousands.

I wish I had known that you could buy original ones cheaper, it would have save a lot in tooling costs.

LOL

I've got a set of rares ones on my car and I can't tell them apart from the genuine ones on another car I've got.

No issues with the glass falling out of mine - even at 200kph on the drag strip

I have heard good and bad.

I have also heard that the shape is a bit different. Can anyone comment on this?

Thumbs up for making new ones. Well done.

Les my statement of not being the best is exactly what I was trying to say that there was a problem with the glue being used and some Ebay ones are just as dear as new ones ...I wasn't saying there is /was anything wrong with the body of the mirror ...and when buying used ones the chrome maybe pitted something to keep in mind when buying used

the plastic tab is very flimsy, and you can "slide" the supplied screws into the holes (as in they dont/barely grab) resulting in a "poor mount of the mirror" i bought a second sets thinking the first may have been a dud and the result was the same,

les "I might add that we have been selling these since 2003 and have sold many thousands." i'm sure this is true however it is irrelevant, the two i bought ended up in the bin, i didnt bother complaining or kicking up a stink, rather i refuse to make the same mistake again

also in regards to your remark at Big Kev "Your statement of them being not the best is incorrect as they were taken of the market once we found there was a problem and the new ones will be correct." this is rubbish as the people who bought them and had the "glass" fail would not agree with you

i am by no means having a crack at any party, just sharing my experiences with fellow torana lovers

I have put the mirror mounts up to be checked something could have gone wrong with the tooling, while I was checking they do not appear to suit he sports mirror according to the parts book is that correct?

You should not throw out any Rare Spares part that you consider unusable, as all our parts come with a money back guarantee .this also goes for the mirrors if the glass fell out we would replace them.

I wouldnt touch the rares mirrors. As I've posted before, I've broken two. The first I bumped, as I have bumped the factory ones many times. The plastic case broke where it mounts to the metal stalk. When the plastic case is broken like this I could see how thin the moulding is in this area - way too thin IMO.

Second one broke, not sure, probably from a bump, and the metal casting broke in 2 - I often see this sort of breakage in cheap Chinese castings. I thought the rares mirrors looked fine when I purchased them, but as with much of rares stuff you need to look closer to see the corners that have been cut.

I've had many sets of factory mirrors, i've bumped them & they move out of place, just grab them & adjust, & sure I've seen them break, but never in the way ive seen the rares ones break.

Les it sounds to me that you have a invested interest with Rare Spares .....so I will ask you a question .....I brought a two parts for the centre console the part that fits around the gear stick and the other the flip lid where you would store your sunnies wallet etc .....the fit was ok but it was the finish that was disappointing both had the fish scale finish ...one was a dark black colour and the other a lighter colour ....these two parts are ment to match each other in colour and when I took them back to RSP the guy there showed very little interest and told me to take it or leave it ....poor service ....so I left it

Big Kev

I would say that the parts should match if they go next to each other but it can happen with different batches of Paint, if you took them back where did you take them RSP is only in Melbourne ,I see you are in Sydney so I assume you took them to Rare Spares Sydney, is this the case. If it was a case oft take it or leave it that is poor service and I apologies

Les ....yes your right Rare Spares Sydney / Prospect store .....I was thinking they were all one store and Melbourne being the main store ????
Once again these two parts of the console should match reguardless of where I brought them .....
So wheres the quality control and I would of thought these would of been made to a standard piece ...colour /size and finish ...
Someone who spends 5K on a total rebuild wouldn't care but on the other hand someone who is spending 55K plus on a restoration expects better ....and I expect better its my money

Mmmmm interesting how a simple question can spark such a discussion.

I contacted Rares yesterday about the mirrors and finally got my answer.........mirrors come complete with full fitting kit.

Also no rare spares stores has stock of either left or right.........but new stock will hit our shores on 27/06/2014 and minor issues with these repros have been addressed according to the rares rep I was speaking with yesterday.

I have placed my order and I will give them a go......as said in an earlier post they come with a money back guarantee or replacement. Cant lose can I. lol

I have two pairs of genuine GMH sports mirrors with gaskets, base plates etc I'll be flicking soon, one pair is black, the other has been colour coded to my Mrs car. May be willing to trade for other parts.

FWIW I had the bracket fall out of my Rares GTS/SLR mirror and the glass was smashed (during closing the door, not dumping the clutch). I got some new glass and glued it all together with superglue this morning. Hope it holds...

Has anyone seen a set of GTS / SL/R mirrors like this before?

I've read that powered mirrors were an option on UC and HX/HZ, anyone else have a set?
