I remember somebody around here did a pair of hatch scuff plates in carbon fiber, which I thought looked pretty impressive, but I can't find the thread now?

That's a hotly debated topic, some were zinc plated, some were chromed, and that's all I'm sayin'!

I had my LH ones Cad plated originally but within a few months of them sitting in storage, they went black.

I then had them zinc'd and they came back as shiny as chrome. But they have since dulled in finish.

Id say zinc plating is the way to go,
or anodised silver if its possible..

I gather the scuffs would have to b in
excellent cond? No nicks deep scratches or
is that all taken care of at the platers.

Get chrome ones. If you don't like them paint them black.

Problem solved! :spoton:

Turns out I never uploaded a direct pick of them to photobucket, but you can see one in this pick.

Cadmium with a blue passivate, would have been the gmh finish from new, now replaced by zinc & blue passivate. If you just ask your plater for blue zinc, that's what you'll get, it looks good & easy to look after, just my opinion though & yes the better they are, the better they'll come up, zinc is around 1/3 of chrome price. Chrome looks nice, but you are going to have to keep it polished. Gary.

This is how all the bits I had Cad plated ended up after about 3-6 months storage in a bedroom.

Then I had them zinc plated.

Everything I had cad plated ended up the same. It all had to be redone. Total waste of money. The zinc finish has now gone dull. I was surprised also at its chrome like finish.

Chrome and back-lit is the go. Get 'LJ SL' or 'GTR' lit up in your scuff plates. I'd put a photo up as an example but don't want to be called a W anchor. LOL.

Yes Maz, cadmium was the original base coating, not easy to get done now because it's carsenagenic ( cancer forming ) so todays base coating uses zinc instead, you can use the original passivates over the top though, so it pretty much looks as per original, Gary.
