i have a 308 with a high energy oil pan that apparently holds about 6.5 litres of oil

do i need to extend my dip stick, as at the moment it does not indicate there is oil in the pan

i filled it with at least 6 litres of oil

The dipstick & tube needs to match the oil pan you're using, but the oil LEVEL itself is related to the block & crankshaft, however many litres of oil are below that level is irrelevant as far as the dipstick is concerned.

I'd think any quality pan would be designed to use an OEM dipstick & tube, or alternatively be supplied with the appropriate items?

What sump, tube & dipstick combo are you using?

There was a thread around here somewhere not that long ago where someone was trying to measure / figure out the level in a standard sump, but I can't seem to find it right now.

High energy design their sumps so you use the factory dipstick.

My sump was rated at 6.5 litres, I just put that much in then marked the dipstick at that level. I simply scored it with a cold chisel.

 at least  6lt???

i had this question going not long ago,,  from what i found out there where a couple manufactures of the HE oil pans,,

as above the real answer is to have someone measure from the bottom of the block to the top of the oil line on a factory set up, i couldnt get anyone to do that, or you can measure from the top of a factory sump down to the full mark on a factory dipstick, then transfer that to your dipstick
