LX Idle Up Solenoid

I have constant power to my idle up solenoid and was looking for a wiring diagram that shows where the power comes from so i can work out why.I need this working for the air conditioning but should only come on when i put the air-conditioning on.

It should be on the same circuit as the compressor clutch.

Hi .

The compressor clutch comes from the passengers side under the box.The idle up comes from the wiring harness on the drivers side that connects coil,temp gauge etc.They appear to come from different places but that has given me a thought .I may be able to follow it back from the compressor clutch

Hi, I don't think you should hook up to the clutch wire as when it cycles off the solenoid closes and then when it cuts back in the solenoid won't be activating the throttle .There should be a seperate power wire once you turn the air con on it energises the solenoid.

That's exactly what it's meant to do.

 

Idle up should only activate when the compressor engages, so as to counter-act the drop in RPM due to the load of the compressor.

This device that you are referring to as an "idle-up solenoid" is not meant to increase the idle speed when the a/cond is engaged.

 

This LX is an ADR27A version & as such the carby has an "idle stop solenoid". It is not wired to the a/cond clutch wiring, it is wired so that it has 12V when the ignition is switched on. It is designed as an anti-dieseling solenoid, so that the throttle closes the moment the ignition is switched OFF to stop the engine running on.

 

The solenoid does not have enough grunt to lift the throttle lever against the cable & spring etc. in any case.

 

I've found the best method to provide an improved idle with the a/cond ON, is to re-plumb the vac advance solenoid so that it provides full manifold vacuum at idle when the a/cond clutch is switched on.

The correct method of adjustment is to disconnect the solenoid & adjust the base idle screw to around 500 RPM after the engine has fully warmed up.

 

Then reconnect the solenoid & lift up the throttle lever to allow the solenoid to extend & using a 1/4" spanner adjust the solenoid tip to set the idle speed, which from memory is around 600-700 RPM, depending on whether auto or manual. Then make sure the throttle drops after the ignition is switched off. 

 

Assuming everything is stock & correctly set, the engine will not run-on, after switch off.

 

This solenoid has nothing to do with the a/cond, all Holden ADR27A carbies (Bendix-Strombergs & Rochester Q-Jets) have this solenoid.

Hi Brad, my car is an auto 308, My solenoid is powered from the aircon on switch ,so once you engage the compressor you manually increase revs with the throttle the solenoid holds the revs while your compressor cycles from then on. Set revs as per above but 1250rpm with aircon on but compressor wire disconnected,once connected that should give you approx 800rpm in drive( mine has modified cam) this my own experience.
