Was told to use Dextron III for the T5 gearbox.
Doesn't sound right...any ideas?

ATF is correct. T5s have a friction lining on the synchros similar to auto clutches, and the tolerances are designed to suit auto trans fluid.

If you go with gear oil you will need to ensure that its slightly on the thinner side and use an additive that is suitable for the friction linings. But there's no need as they run nicely on the ATF they were designed for.

Whilst ATF is fine in most T5, I prefer to put a 75/90 trans oil.

Just a little something I pick-up in research for my T5

Update on Dexron VS Gear oil for NON-World Class T-5's:

Dexron-III ATF replaced Dexron-II in 1993. While Dexron-III meets or exceeds the previous specifications, the viscocity of Dexron-III is thinner than the original Dexron-II that was specified for the NON-World Class T-5. This thinner fluid is fine for the World Class T-5 with the lined synchro rings, but the NON-World Class T-5 with the brass synchro rings needs a thicker fluid to work optimally. As a result, Tremec has specified 30W MOTOR OIL for the NON-World Class T-5's. While Tremec has not published an official document about this, it is confirmed by an email dated 1/9/2012 from a Tremec Engineering/Support employee.

WARNING: Using gear oil or motor oil in a T-5 with the composite lined blocker rings found in the World Class T-5's will destroy the blocker ring linings over a period of a few months rendering those synchronizers useless.

Exactly, and the VN onward box is a World Class T5.

Weird.

I had my VN T-5 rebuilt. My gearbox guru specified oil, not ATF.

I have recently fitted a 355/T-5 from a VR into my sons VL. It has oil also so that's what went back in it.

When my t56 was rebuilt, i have run 75 85 full synthetic in it since, It's been all good, Trans shop said that it was much better than the atf in them & it's what everyone does in the us aswell, no problem with syncros all though i run a rip shifter & full braided hose setup, along with a xtreme clutch, works great. If you change the synchros to ones that don't have the friction lining then its basically just get the right weight gear oil. Otherwise as I first mentioned there are additives available that are suitable for the friction lining if you really want to run gear oil.

Seems a bit pointless though when ATF is cheaper and these boxes are perfectly happy running it.
