ok lads

prob a silly question but do you put felt underlay under the carpet over dynamat / equivalent - i think i know the answer being 'yes' and if so how much to cover the floor area???

LX hatch

could measure but not home and want to order online ...and i know someone here will have the answer

and which one to choose and and experiences to share?

I think, if you are buying the moulded carpet at the same time, most of the suppliers also sell underlay in various grades.  They would know how much you need to buy.  Cheers Ron

Watching with interest. I would like to know too. Eventually I plan to do this on my hatch. It's noisy around 1400rpm and with a 340KW heater up front it can get pretty hot.

You're still meant to use underlay of one type or another on top of Dynamat and similar products.

Check out a company called "Car Builders" for information and their range of products.

I recently lined my WB ute with some cheap sound deadener and put carpet straight over the top, but this is just a daily driver and not a huge issue with noise, more wanting to try and keep the cabin a bit cooler.  One thing you will want to consider if you use both, deadener and underlay, is the overall thickness. With 10mm sound deadener and carpet I had to get longer bolts to capture the nuts for the seat rails and the console was vey tight between the tunnel and the bottom of the dash.  Cheers Ron

thanks guys for the reply's, that site'Car Builders  ' looks good for the lining.. like the look of that acoustic stuff that goes over the dynamat type product

but still in the same boat....how much to buy?????

 http://www.carbuilde...nterior-stage-2

i pulled the trigger on the dynamat after reading through heaps of mixed review in comparisons  maybe a bit XXXy but so is doing twice!

so ill probably go the dynamatt on the floor as i bought the 34sqfoot pack and use the cheaper stuff on the doors ect wanted the flooring o be the most effective as you could imagine

as for floor the carpet dealer i have already purchased

on the car builder site it looks to be 3.6sqm pack but i would hate to be short once starting the job and hate to pay for more than i needed as welll....mistakes like that add up quickly

looks like when i knock off shift i will be getting the measuring tape out unless some one comes through with a measurement for us

cheers again

I purchased 5.4m sq, and had some left over.
I also had half a sheet delaminate and didn’t use it. Looked to be a manufacturing issue.
I only did the traffic areas in my LC. So not under the rear seat, and cut outs for the front seat rails.

How do the before and after noise levels compare?

I see that you've used the Car Builders acoustic liner for the underlay too.

What carpet supplier did you use? We're you happy with the fit? I've seen that some have the cut out for the steering column with stitching around it and others don't even have the cut out.

I think the smaller pack might go close.
I still have some left and had to waste some because of the delamination on one sheet.
I used it for the underlay as well, it feels fine under the carpet.
I used cloth tape the hold down the edges and seams.

Haven’t used the car to know the difference, it more the thought that counts at the moment.
I didn’t go overboard as you can see.

The carpet is cheap stuff from eBay. I’m just laying something down so I can keep moving.
The fit is good. Probably be there for a few years, ha ha.
Some edges were already finished, like the steering column, some were not.
The good carpet suppliers finish the edges on request. Dash Original will put the handbrake cutout in as well.
I’m working around these issues a few different ways just so it looks reasonable.

Hi,

I'm at this stage as well. Did you use Dynamat and the Acoustic liner as well? It seems that the Acoustic liner may be suitable to be used by itself?

Cheers

Scott

I have put dynamat and new underlay under new carpets in my hatch and I would recommend using both as the noise and heat has been reduced massively.

My floor mats used to melt to the floor on the passenger side due to the extractors and now with an upgraded engine too, it doesn't seem to get very hot in that spot at all.

Hi Jonesy.  Not sure if you are up to this stage yet but how did you go with the underlay etc.  Reason I ask is I'm wondering with the deadener and underlay then adding the thickness of the carpet, is there any issues fitting all this under/tucked into things like the kick panels, scuff plates console etc.  Cheers Ron

Hot tip guys : Seats bolt to bare floors. Not to carpet, not to underlay, & not to Dynamat.

Bolt the seat down, mark 10 mm clearence around the mounts, remove the seat & cut the underfelt / Dynamat away so the seat mount bolts to the bare floor.

Then you don't need longer bolts & you don't have to spend the rest of your ownership days tightening the seat bolts back up .

I would hate to be in a wreck with loose seat bolts! :)

Just a slightly left field suggestion.

I just put some Exhaust Insulating Wrap on the lower end of the extractors through to about the end of the centre console - the area that always seems to get warm from the 2 and half inch twin heaters.

Works a treat!! No more heat and also reduces cabin noise. Does not look exactly great but hey unless someone is under the car looking at the exhaust........
