Just wondering if I can use a higher amperage alternator than the once specified in the repair manual? It says the original one is a Delco Remy 33 amps at 14v volts. Looking at putting in a Bosch 55a alt.

No problem, so long as it physically fits and the wiring is upgraded to suit (a 33A wire won't carry 55A for very long).

Also note that there's a few different types such as internally or externally regulated, and some of the later ones are even controlled by the ECU.

I changes my 35A unit to a 55A Bosch, and suggested I also ungraded the earth and positive wiring at the same time

Id recommend if doing an upgrade, to go to a 85A alt off of a VN-VS V8. Cheap and ubiquitous. Has the right pulley and bolts straight up, just need to rotate the rear housing so the regulator plug points the right way. also need to get a Bosch injector plug to suit the reg, S terminal goes to the B+ terminal, L terminal goes to the existing warning light wire. Use a decent charge wire, something like #8 or #6 B&S cable (10-16mm2), and cant hurt to upgrade the battery negative to block cable either while you are there. You aren't likely to exceed the output of one of these considering they ran cars with EFI, A/C, thermos, power options etc. just fine.
