First problem would be getting good guards and rear wheel arches
if you can find them ,leave the flares on

I have spare front guards, but its the rear im worried about getting back. I think it would be a mission

Its a 5000, so i thought it was better to get back to no flares

I wouldn't really say either is worth more or less, there are so few genuine cars around that haven't been butchered that it's rare to find one in factory original condition, but cars with flares are more popular and attract a larger group of buyers, meaning they may be easier to sell for the stupid money?

If you were restoring a car purely to resell then I'd say leave it as is (whether it had flares or not), either way a quality resto is worth decent money, just to different groups of people.

If you're building it for yourself then just do what you like and ignore all the naysayers.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Ive always liked the fat look of flares and bigger tyres, yet i find the orignal no flares just as appealing. I guess you call it nostalgic!? :)

I’d be inclined to leave it as is. As above, if you do decide to sell in the future you will have severely reduced your target audience by taking away the flares.

I love the muscly look of a SLR5000 with 13inch wheels and hubcaps,..real tuff look isn't it.....please excuse my sarcasm but unfortunately most LH SLR5000 's grew up to look like L34's and so on with LX sedan's the same into A9X's..etc as with SS hatchbacks into A9X hatchbacks...if you bought a SLR5000 is this day and age with no flairs you certainly wouldn't go and put flairs on it you would buy one with flairs unless its a mongrel car missing most of its belongings such as original motor or ID tags, rusted etc most would understand,..what generally pisses me off no end is the mentally to convert all these car's back to standard cause there worth more money bla bla bla,...for frOcks sake how about enjoying the car for what they are instead worshipping these car's as shrine's..it's always good to know these car's are worth money but my happiness is worth a lot more..on social media when similar questions are asked on some sites they go into melt down with everyone expressing the pro's and cons about flaring and non flaring,...nothing pisses me more than seeing the question asked should i flare or not..its all about choice and admittedly some are new comers and seekiing advice and knowledge which is fine,..but by the end of the show down its about money and being worth more...just my Monday rant and opinion...Big wheels, flares, drop tank, hot engines spells tough to me..

I currently have a flared SS hatch with big wheels and I love it but I also have owned an original 5L SS hatch unflared and to be honest I would have that back in a heart beat.

To me an original unflared SLR or SS has way more appeal. Probably because they stand out in the crowd of flared Torana's. Just take a look at the white unflared SS hatchback that won the Torana nationals (I think it was the nationals) a year or so ago. Absolutely stunning car.

Yes uncle, i have seen the post on facebook and thats exactly why i asked here in this forum. I hoped for a better reception

I was purely asking the opinion of other torana owners. If the car didnt have flares, i would leave it

As i mentioned i like the look of both styles, im just a little torn as to which way i go. Its nothing to do with the car value flared or not. Its more about fence sitting amd which way i should fall

imho
Flared looks tough.
Unflaired looks factory.

Seen as it's flared, reckon too much hassle to unflare it.

2 cents

Agree ^^^^, could also be very expensive if you can't repair the rear arches yourself.

+1, Leave the flairs.

You're right Ray.

The chrome accessory lifting handle on the hatch ruins the whole factory look from the rear. :)

You're missing a much bigger chrome issue... An SS hatch (going by the plate) with chrome bumpers!

I reckon flares on a fat Torrie (complemented of course with spoilers, bonnet scoop, fat rubber and a good colour) is what got me hooked on Torana's as a young kid. There's just something about that fat/muscle look that can't be beaten (even when sitting still they still scream race-car). There's nothing else like them on the road. And of course it links them to the almighty Bathurst race cars of the 70's.

I would never go the effort of 'un-flaring' an already flared car, no matter what model it is. Keep it tough and enjoy it.

If the starting point was an unflared car of significance, then yes, it would make sense not to flare it (personally though, I'd still pay more for flares!!).

I've owned both too. I do miss my un-flared LX hatch, but that car never looked like a muscle car. Still awesome, but different.

It's all personal preference - it'd be a real boring world if we all drove the same style car.

By the way, the car above looks great!
