Spigot Bearing/Bush Lubrication Proceedure

Before I go soaking my new spigot bearing in oil over night or forcing oil into it I thought I'd check to see if anyone's had issues when doing this with excess oil contaminating their clutch.

 

I know some swear by only using a few drops of oil on the spigot while others say soak and then there's forcing oil into it by hand as well.

 

If there's actual real world evidence that soaking or injecting oil into the spigot causes issues then I guess I'd just go with the three drops method.

I just give it a lick of grease…………….never had a problem.

Ive always soaked it in oil over night. Never had an issue.

Back in the dark ages when I was an apprentice I was told to push oil through the Holden sinted bush before installation. Put your thumb over the bottom hole, Fill with oil and with your other thumb to push the oil through and then install the bush. You can see the oil on the outside of the bush if you do it right. Never had a problem.

Think I'll go with this approach.

The instructions in the ancient days for the sintered bronze spigot bushes was to soak overnight in oil.
Never had an issue with clutch contamination.
You do of course wipe it “clean” before installing.

I usually leave it standing to drain excess oil for a while after soaking overnight too.

I remember my boss who did his mechanics apprenticeship in Italy and worked for Muir’s in Haberfield during the late 60’s and though to the late 70’s
He then opened his own work shop, i started there as an apprentice and worked for him for 10 years,
Any way i remember we always had a glass jar that was full of oil and sintered brass spigot bushes, so when required which was quite often in those days
Just fish out a bush give it a quick wipe, and never had an issue.
