Hi all,

Just wanting to confirm something with you guys.

Bought a Rare Spares speedo cable for LH/LX and it seems way too long.  Service manual routing is as follows

Speedo%20Cable%204.jpg

The cable I have would have to be routed in either of the following two ways, the first of which would interfere with the front suspension and the second has a sharper turn than I'd like into the box.

Speedo%20Cable%202.jpg

Speedo%20Cable%203.jpg

Has anyone else found the replacement cables to be too long or have I been given a dud?

Thanks

I bought one year's ago off eBay I think, can't remember the seller.

It was too long or much longer than original, I guessed some were longer to suit T350/400 boxes that might have had the cable outlet on the passenger side of the box

I guess I'm going to have to use this thing then if they're all made that length but it looks to me that it'd suffer more wear having to be routed more sharply than it'd otherwise be if it were original length.

It'd be nice if Rares would mention were they deviate from the standard part so as to not leave their customers wondering W.T.F. is going on while fitting up their parts

I'm grateful that there's an option, it'd just be nice to know.

Agree I didn't know the length was different until I tried to fit it.

Did yours come with a grommet?

You could get a new custom cable made, I will consider doing this in the future as I can't fit the ECM speed sensor with the current cable I have and may need to make a join in the cable somewhere for the sensor

Not near you but MIS, make cables. In Marayong near Sydney

Has anyone given RSP some feedback on this?

+1. I would try RSP first.

There is a business in Eltham, Retrospares 9439 3777 who sell a lot of stuff but also make cables.  I think they used to be called Auto Cables.  May be worth having a chat to them if no success with RSP.  Good luck Ron.

Good point.  My initial assumption was to think that the extra length was due to them sharing one cable design over multiple car models to spread costs.  Either that or I was shipped the wrong part so wanted some feedback from other people.

I'll go over today and measure the cable I have and send RSP some feedback and see what happens first.  Hopefully I don't have to get a whole new cable made up but if I do it's handy to know who to go to to get that done so thanks both neglectedtorana and Cook for the info.  I've made a note of both of those business just in case I need them.

Ive found RSP appreciate feedback like this. But yes, it could be a case of one size fits all.

I ordered one longer than std for a TH350, was only about 15 to 30 dollars more to have a special made.

Where was that from, and how much total.

Thanks, Greg.

Just spoken with Rares, they're going to check the length of a genuine cable they have to compare with what's in the pack they have on the shelf.

The length of the cable he pulled out of a packet was 2.010 metres tip to tip.

I'll pull the cable I've got and measure that and we'll be able to find out whether it's just a packaging error or not.

I took an old cable , plugged it onto the speedo & rounted where i needed , then put a mark on the cable with a corresponding mark on the chassis .

Then i removed the cable & connected the other end to the gearbox & routed it back to the mark.

This gave me a + / - for the length.

1 phone call to Joe at Autocables & $85 later the cable arrived & fit perfectly.

Sounds easy peasy and same price as Rares.

I get the feeling Rares want to make good on the cable I have though so hopefully I don't need to pay again. Will know more tomorrow.

Probably the same place, I googled MIS and Google says they're closed permanently but I think it said that when I got my cable extension made

02 96218190 is the number I have but sounds like you have some options

Hope RSP sort it out

Just measured my cable a it's the same length as what Rares have packaged as an LH/LX Torana cable so that's not good.

They haven't had a chance to measure the factory UC cable they have and so I was wondering if anyone had a factory cable laying about that they can measure.

Thanks,
Greg

Just measured mine it’s approx 1580mm +/- 10mm hard to lay flat as it has permanent curves in it.

That's about the length of the UC one they have on the shelf.

Looks like that's what people should order in place of the LX/LH one.

I don't have a UC Speedo handy but I assume the plugs are the same as earlier cars.

I had exactly the same problem, I took the cable back (9943810) and also took in my original LX cable(with the factory sticker and grommet in place).

The manager didn't want to know about the problem and told me my factory cable could of been from a different car or an aftermarket cable. The factory cable has the part number molded in the rubber grommet. I bought the UC cable (9940225) and opened on the counter - it was the same length as my original LX cable.

My best guess is at some point in the past Rare Spares acquired a NOS LHD Torana cable and used that as the basis for the length of there reproductions. There is no gearbox set-up that would need a cable that long in an LH/LX torana.

Using a LHD cable as a reference makes sense cause like you say, there's no reason to have a 2 metre cable in a RHD car.

So the plug on the end of the UC cable was the same as LX?

LX and UC are the same fittings both ends to suit : Gearbox end Trimatic or M20/21, Instrument end Plastic clip style. Don't even bother trying to "educate" Rare Spares. I tried and they just aren't interested at the store level.

So I spoke to Alex at Rares and even though my cable was purchased about 5 years ago (but not installed until the other day), he made good and exchanged my 2 odd metre cable for a UC one.

I'll install it tomorrow and that will be another job I can tick off the list.

Many thanks to Alex.

Good result. And good on RSP. They do cop a bit of a hiding sometimes but I think we’d be stuck without them.

So true. Not all of their stuff is perfect but it's not all bad either and as long as they support what they sell then all is good.
