Hi Guys,

New to the forum, couldn't find much info on this topic so I thought I would share my experience to help others hopefully.

I had a M20 Muncie in my LH with a 355 a 9 inch, I was going to refresh the original Muncie but thought I might on-sell the original at a later date and upgrade to M22Z brand new box from America.

Fitted the box last weekend, no dramas and this weekend we will be fitting the repro console.  I did a bit of a dummy fit and it looks promising.

3 things we had to do was, bash the tunnel around the linkage area, not a  lot was needed.

Cut a little section of the tunnel out to let the shifter have a bit of room.

I will have to bend the little circle bit at the end of the shifter boot to an oval shape to fit the Hurst shifter handle.

The shifter I ended up with was a Hurst Comp Plus, PN 391-8014 and the linkage kit was PN 373-8611.

I asked the guy in the USA to source a shifter that locates as far in the middle of the box as possible and at the right distance back from the bell housing to come through the existing shifter hole.

I have a straight 8 inch shifter on it now and it fits perfect.

I'm happy to share the customs, import duty, cost, order and wait time details or why I didn't go fot the Tremec if it helps anyone.  I'm no expert but just having part numbers would have helped me heaps, so hopefully this helps someone.

All in all was very positive. Considering what you would pay for a fresh rebuilt one off ebay, a brand new import was almost exactly the same price. might be a little more now because off the exchange rate.

Cant beat that sound of the old school Rockcrushers,  I think these new ones are a little quieter due to the tighter tolerances these days.

Any questions, hit me up here.

I will post some picks after the weekend to better explain.

Matt.

Hopefully we can catch up one day on one of Craig's runs so I can hear it, but I reckon the noise would drive me insane. I have a project here which came with a Super T10, but I was thinking of the Tremec anyway as I would like the overdrive.

I Have a medium to loud exhaust and a gilmer belt so all the mechanical noises compliment each other.

If my car was quieter and the gearbox was the loudest part of the car then yeah I think it would piss me off to.

I will post up a video of what it sounds like when I get the console all in.

Here is a video of what the LH Torana sounds like from a few years back.

I've done a few laps around there as well. The opposite direction though.

Is the gearbox in neutral or one of the bottom gears in that last pic? If neutral, does the handle hit the console when shifting hard from 1st to 2nd / 3rd to 4th?

Is there a shifter handle that is a couple of inches longer?

Have you found the Fat Mat helpful in reducing heat / noise?

Cant remember what gear it was in but no binding in any gear.

Yep, heaps of different  handle combos, I have another one that is longer and has a kink in it about half way up so the gear knob ends up closer to you, I'm tall and have long arms so the one I have in the pic fits me the best.

Fat Mat works great, I have it an all the doors so when you close the door it sounds like a thud, really nice noise. Improves the stereo sound a bit, not so tinny.

It keeps some sound out of the cabin but stopping the heat coming through the bottom of the firewall, foot well and trans tunnel is the main reason I put it in, for that purpose it works great.

If you are going to install some, I would only put it on the large flat areas, no need to cover 100% of the steel.  Grab a heat gun and a little roller, heat up the metal and the backing of the Fat Mat at the same time. get the metal hot so you can't keep your hand on it, same for the Fat Mat.

Press it on the area and roll over it as hard as you can. Not so important on the horizontal surfaces but essential on the inside of the doors,  I wouldn't do the inside of the roof, to risky

Just had her out for the first drive with the new gearbox.  100% recommend the Muncie M22Z no problem.

Gear noise is minimal, you can hear it in 1st and 2nd, starts to fade out out in 3rd and silent in 4th.

It's probably at its loudest when you are coasting to a set of lights but even then its no annoying at all.

Is it an early LH or very late LX?  Love the air horns too. You need them in Perth traffic!!!

Nice ride! Couple of Q's

What diff ratio are you running ?  I have a 3.5 ratio and thinking M22W might be a better match for the street without changing ratios

Who did you buy the muncie off?

Shiney005 - Late LH, yeah air horns are cool but not working right now, you can see they are disconnected in the engine bay pic, I think the motor has dries up.

Lima31 - I did have 411's but way to tall for a 4 speed so I have 3.25 now and she is much happier on the freeway.

Got the Muncie from Paul cangialosi over at 5 speeds, best in the business, reasonably priced and great shipping, in all 5 days from Florida to my door in Perth for around $300AUD shipping.

He has a Youtube channel and he explains why he uses the parts he does in a heap of videos. Any parts that he is not satisfied with, he gets his own made to his spec.

He also went above and beyond when I asked him to find a shifter that comes out the same distance back from the face of the bellhousing and that is in the middle of the gearbox as much as possible.

My old shifter was way over to the passenger side and was not going to work with the new console.

Hope that helps.

My apologies if dredging up an old thread offends anyone.

I'm looking at slotting a Muncie into my LH and wanted to thank you for the part numbers.

Now that you've lived with it for a while do you still think the M22Z was the right choice?

Cheers!

In my opinion the Muncie paired with a good shifter is still the best suited manual trans option to the platform. I sometimes think about the T56 as an upgrade, but the cost, the need to go 3.7+ diff gears and extra 70 lbs of weight puts me off it. TKO 5 speed is a bit halfway between the two.

If building new, no real advantage. Both can be built to 550+ ft lbs with the right parts.

M22 is about 5 kilos heavier if you are a weight watcher.
