Hi all, I’m looking to find out the length of the intake and exhaust valves to suit a J Zed Head.
The valve sizes of 1.90 intake and exhaust of 1.50, Im aware of.
However, I’ve searched and can’t determine the overall dimensions of the valves. I’d like to know the length / height and diameter to fit up some nice Manley or Ferrara valves to a bare JZed Head.
Cheers

5.1" total length, .250" tip height.

You can run longer valves no problem, just have to space the rockers up, but 5.1" is adequite to get a good spring in there.

Fairly easily available length for chev heads, but you won't get a 1.9/1.5 combo, you'll have to start with 1.94/1.6" & cut them down - or call JZed, he has them on the shelf.

Hey TK383,

Appreciate your feedback and advice mate.
As you say, we will have to mod the sizes of the valves to slide them in, but apart from that it’s something that the Head guy can arrange easy enough.
Thanks again!
Cheers

Hey TK383,

Would you know the exact diameter of the valve stem to suit the J Zed?
Are they 3/8” diameter?
Thanks again

why wouldnt you just contact jzed for the valves as tk383 said,he makes the heads as well as supplies all the gear that goes into them.a no brainer really.

Looking for a higher quality valve for the application and unfortunately that information wasn’t provided when I asked for it.
I can understand Joes reason behind this, because its his baby. However, I’m over waiting and being delayed by people. Over promising and under delivering.
So thanks to TK383 who provided the info needed so I can finish the build.

I've found everything in the automotive performance world, ironically, moves very slow. I rarely see delivery of work within what I would consider reasonable time frames. No idea why, skills shortage maybe? Still, ive seen many mates (and myself), very, very frustrated with the time it takes to get things done.

Yeah it’s disappointing particularly when there’s big money invested by the customer. You’re probably right, it’s a trade with not enough skilled up guys who can deliver what they say they can. I’ve been really stuffed around, one guy in particular Peter Trimbounas from Hi Tec Engine who’s a thief and a dead set grub.
Hard to get the right people to deliver the goods. But, thankfully we are back on track and closing in on the finish line and then got some cruising miles to catch up on!

Oh no... Yeah, I have spoken to the fella from HiTec engines and I have heard a few horror stories. I think the bloke knows his stuff but there are a few from this very forum that also had bad experiences. He also has some pretty wild claims about hp, that frankly, I do not quite believe (could be wrong though..)...

That should be interesting. If you need any help tuning them let me know. Do you know what size chokes you'll run?

I think 42mm is what minimum recommended for the JZED head with 48mm webers. Many run 44mm.. Sounds quite big, I know, but I have been assured by Joe that the head behaves quite different to say, a typical race 9 port head... From what I have been told by Vince Macri, the power produced is quite linear compared to a 9 port- less turbulence from the bell mouth through to the end of the port helps with tuning as well as response.

The choke size seems quite big and you would expect a soggy bottom end to some extent, but with a roller cam and reasonable, ie not huge duration, the power should come on quite early compared to a very long duration solid flat tappet, like what we would run in a holden cast head. I'd expect it to start buzzing around 3200rpm and pull through to about 7700rpm.

I am going to run my RT carbs (45mm webers)- unsure what choke size I will start with but it will be on the small side to start with, then I will try a few different sizes incrementally to see what I like the most.

Not just yet, will wait until we set it up on the dyno, after assembly. I’m pretty sure the 48’s have 40 chokes so we shall see. Thanks for the offer on the Weber’s.

Yeah Chris, started last year, continued into early this year. There’s been 15 or more charges laid against the gutless lying grub c#%^ of a thing.
The Cops are right up him like a rat up a drain pipe. If he’s tapped you also, it’s worth while pursuing and recovering what is yours. I’ve been able to get some items not all. Cops have been all over it

You can cut 40 mm chokes in half and machine them out to 43 mm. Might take a bit of bravery, but there only chokes. mine worked.

Regards

Good to expose another con man.

Thanks for the heads up on the Chokes!

Hey Duggan 208,
Any recommendations up here in Sydney who would be capable of arranging the CNC porting and the setting up of a JZed Head please?
Cheers

Thanks Warren, I went to see the guys at Rams, I spoke to Darren and Jim. 8-10 week wait and $6k to CNC port it, supply all hardware except roller rockers and valve springs. No doubt they do quality work, and are professional in what they do, however, I thought $6k was excessive and I was hoping to get it done a little sooner.

He is not sydney based, but Rod Rainford (he is a forum member) I believe has a CNC for porting and when I spoke to him, it was a fair bit cheaper than that. From memory his business is Advanced Dynamics and is located in Bendigo. I spoke to him a while back. Might be worth a call.
