My FJ has been sitting around  for 30+ years and is now getting a rebuild.   It had a UC rack and pinion mounted on the front of an L300 cross member.  Like from what I see, the LH rack bush has given up the ghost.  When I remooved the boot there were plenty of bits of rubbish in there and it looks like the outer step on the bush has collapsed and the remainder has been pulled into the rack tube.  T will have to pull the thing down to get the rest of the bits out.

I assume the new Nolathane bush should push in from the LH end but I would have expected there should be something there to retain the bush or is it simply a tight pres fit.  Got me intrigued.

Some info from anyone who has replace one of these would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hello Geoff.

Hope you have a good hour or so to do some reading. http://www.gmh-toran...sh-replacement/

There are links to more threads on the steering racks in post #4.

Cheers

Rack in bits to have an empty housing, wash it out!

Gotta undo the LHE of the rack to release the arm and lock nut from the rack, so it all fits through the little hole.

The LHE of the rack housing has a groove cut into it inside, the new bush has a lip on the outer that clips/fits/locates/sits into the groove, when the rack is reinstalled its a very neat fit in the bush and this keeps the bush retained in the housing stopping it from moving anywhere.

Reassemble...

Anyone got a photo of the new bushing fitted? Can't see anything in the LHE of the rack housing which resembles this bushing.

Take a photo and post it then we can point it out for you.

There may be nothing more than rubble left of the original bush.

Had another poke around. Didn't realise that was a bushing. Thought it was part of the rack lol.

Wait, nope, that is definitely metal, not plastic or rubber.

Just before the face that has the three reliefs in it, should be a groove, can't see it much in the pic, but looks like a small step in the pic.

The new bush has bumps or nipples on the outer edge on one end, these fit into the groove previously mentioned and when the rack in reinstalled this keeps the bush from being able to get back out.

From memory it was a bit of effort to get the new bush into position due to the material being kinds of stiff.

Here's a pic of many types of bushes from varying manufacturers and how it would look with in the housing.

Getting back to the rack, there is no groove for the nubs the pop into. That's exactly what you would expect to find but it's not there. You can see a small step where is steps down maybe 0.3mm just before the steel bushing.

Also this pin, I've heard mention of it being a sacrificial part. Is it intended that you would drill out this to fit it? And if so what need is there to remove it was in the first place.

I could have promised people I'm not a spastic, but I'm not even covincing myself anymore. Lol.

I have a whiteline branded bush which appears the same as that on the right.

Okay so the thread below mentions some LH had a steel bushing as opposite to the nylon item. It makes sense as to why there was no chunks of bushing in the housing and why there is no internal groove for the poly bushing to sit in. Maybe also why my LH parts book has no listing. I just took it on face value that they all required this bushing in addition to the steel one.

This pin needs to be drilled out so that the rack end & locking nut can be removed . There should be a replacement dowel with the new bush.

Okay this makes more sense. My tierods are different to yours. They don't have a pin like that, instead they are staked with a adjuster and a locking ring.

Is it early LH or all LH racks that have the cast iron bush in the left side?

I wonder about the housing looking like there is no groove for the poly bush to clip into?

Could it be that its not been right for ages as someone has done an unexpected repair on it at some point in its life?

My 74 LH had the steel type bush , it was not cast iron but some sort of " soft " steel that was porus like sintered bronze bushing and was an interference fit into the

rack housing.

From memory it also had "grooves" for oil to flow but it was a while ago , pretty sure i got some made up from the original pattern , will see if i can find it and  get a picture.

Original steel on left also had a small hole in the side , replacement was made out of nylon and works very well .

I recall many many years ago, I had Fulcrum overhaul the rack on my little red cute car. Im sure I remember reading on the invoice that a Torana rack bush was used. I remember thinking that was weird.... So I do wonder if there are rack bushes being re-manufactured for little cute cars that might suit Torana's these days?
