I'm having noise drama with my LSD diff centres (3.36 and 3.08) which I've spent a fortune on last year getting fully reconditioned including lapping but still has a whine above 50mp/h  and louder under acceleration. Someone said that Commodore 6cylinder (VB/VC/VH/VK/VL) crown wheel and pinion sets are exactly the same as banjo. If so I assume they will fit straight into a banjo housing? Before I go and spend more money on this dam diff just want to make sure.

I do know that the uc small salsbury gear set is the same as a banjo diff.

Are you setting the diff up yoyrself or getting it done. Normaly if you use the marking on the pinion to adjust the shim stack behind the bearing and get the tooth mark/ preload set up all is good. If you do not have the origonal shim stack you have to mess arround pushing on and off the pinion bearing to set pinion depth by the tooth mark.

VB, VC and VH 6cyl plus 4.2L. VK and VL are different. WB 6cyl Ute, van and Statesman too have banjo gears and UC too plus certain Geminis. Some locally assembled Toyota as well.

You need the right carrier though, 2.78 and 3.08 use one and 3.36-3.90 the other.

If both centre's are making the same noise, check it's not a wheel bearing aswell.

I have been changing out these diffs myself and feeling the bearings on the axels they feel tight to turn and smooth so think that means they are good. Going to have to just keep trying different 2nd hand open centres till I find one that doesn't whine. Already spent $1800 on these two LSD diffs last year getting them re-conditioned so am balked at throwing more money at them unless someone knows a diff repairer in Brisbane that is a miracle worker.

I agree ^^^ if two fully reco diff centres appear to be making the same noise at the same speeds or thereabouts then I would be looking at what other parts of the car could be making the noise other than the differentials.

Gearbox perhaps?

Dave I've been saying its the gearbox all along but I'm alone on that unqualified diagnosis. I've taken two separate diff/gearbox experts for a drive and both say its diff. The XU1 M20 thats in the car has never been reconditioned that I know of, but for some reason I'm thinking its  gearbox main shaft bearing/s but you can vary the noise by playing with the throttle at 50-60mp/h and there is no noise till you get to that speed. I might just be unlucky that both diffs are making the exact same noise at around the exact same speeds. The 3.08 does starts its noise at 60mph and the 3.36 starts at 50mph (RPM's are probably the same - I didn't check that). The only way to find out is to fit another diff centre and surely three diffs couldn't all be similar?

Drain the oil out of the 4spd and run a magnet over it.

As Gary suggested, throw a new set of wheel bearings on the axles, relatively cheap to do and and if your lucky it may fix your problem. Fingers crossed.

Have you checked your uni joints. Many years ago I had a noise in the rear end that became noticeable around 80kph and was quite distinct at 100kph. Uni joints were stuffed.

If, after all that, you still suspect the diff then get yourself an original service manual, a bearing kit, shims, some bearing blue and a spring scale and set it up yourself. All you're paying a diff shop for is to set your gears badly.

When I had the diffs reconditioned I took the original tail shaft in and had a new front yoke fitted (They reckon my original one had slight play) with 2 new uni's and all balanced, so its not like I'm trying to skimp on anything. I'll just try a couple of 2nd had open centres and if the noise is the same then its definitely got to be something else but I don't think its wheel bearings cause the noise comes in loud at the 50-60mp/h and when you play with the throttle it changes (louder when I accelerate) quieter (but still noisy but not as bad) when cruising.

From memory that's what my stuffed uni joints were like. They weren't too noticeable until around 80kph and above and noisier under load and a little quieter (but still noisy) when floating along on the throttle.

You should be able to get any diff shop to make them. If you want HQ stud pattern you could also get cab chassis axles cut down and either machined for early bearings or get diff ends changed for later bearings and leave axle ends alone.

$375 each is so cheap, what are they being made from? Commodore axles?

Just looked at the link, they are billet. I wonder how he can do them so cheap? US billet axles are about $350-$400 a pair before import and freight so I suppose in quantity it adds up.

I may be confused here ( happens a lot)..but a Tru Trac will still use your original crown wheel and pinion...so may not be the solution?

Solution is find the nearest scrap bin and throw all banjos in it. Then get a real diff. But people want them to look original and not have to pay $500 a kg for worn out factory stuff hence the upgrade. That’s how I see it anyway!

Yes Yel327 you are spot on. Trying to keep everything all original is a pain in the Ar... Tribute owners are truly lucky at half the cost.
