So I’ve run across an older gent who has a very nice HQ panel van. He has owned it since it was six months old - first owner apparently couldn’t keep up the loan payments.

He is pretty sure it’s a genuine sandman but is having some doubts with the passage of time.

its a long way from original now. Non factory colour, 4 speed auto, previous LPG conversion etc

How can I tell if it’s a sandman? He’s a nice bloke and it would be good to help him out if I can.

Send me photos of its ID plates to start with. I may get close with that. Then photos of the tunnel in a few key spots later.

HQ and HJ are similar, the Kingswood versions get harder than Belmont (Holden in HJ) variants.

The build date is a good start. HQ Sandmans were only made in 1974.

There are always exceptions to the rule. Surely these would be known documented prototypes or marketing test vehicles.

Not well known. The ute appears on a 1975 dealer tender as option XX7. The van is in country Victoria. Van is quite interesting, it makes it quite obvious that even in December 1972 Sandman was to receive Kingswood treatment like it eventually did in HX, and somewhere between 12/72 and 1974 they decided to have two trim level Sandmans, Belmont and Kingswood. The 12/72 ute is a Kingswood XX7 of course, but this van has E trim, Kingswood sill strips and chrome Kingswood other stuff. Both are hero colours, Salamanca and March The 17th. Van is top spec driveline L31 M40. Ute is almost top spec, L31 M21 plus LSD. Both completed on 15/12/72 with masked dealer code, Melbourne zone office.

I think the fact that time moved on, designs changed and colour charts changed prior to Sandman release is why the HQ Sandman sales brochure has no photos of these pilots, all the images in the brochure are drawings or doctored photos of sedans or other non-sandman vehicles. The van would have appeared very differently to the eventual Belmont Sandman in how it looked.

Yes. It’ll be originally a column shift too. L31 HQ vans and utes were fairly common.

All HQ Sandman were actually 6cyl (80180, 80380 and 80170 models). HQ V8 Sandman was standard with 253 (80280, 80480 and 80270 models). It was HJ and HX that Sandman was standard with 6cyl (173 initially and 202 later) with other engines optional.

^^It may be a Sandman but probably not. Sad reality is Sandmans especially HQ and HJ were just parts mines for one tonners just like GTS’s and Statesmans were. Most were pulled apart and bodies scrapped when they were rust free. Some like that one were parked and allowed to rot. Despite someone working hard to uglify it, it looks like the body is still decent but needs a lot of work on the quarters and roof.

The craze in the 70's was putting Mercedes headlights in these vans and utes

They say the grass is greener on the other side and I think in this instance the saying is true.
The grass would definitely be greener on the other side of that engine bay.
