Back to the fuel system. I may regret crossing paths with this car.... I ripped the fuel tank out to discover a pretty horrendous state of affairs. I can summarise by simply saying this:

Wanted To Buy: Fuel tank and sender unit assembly to suit VR V8 IRS sedan. Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

And seriously - I'd appreciate any leads on where to find a good tank.

I'm yet to decide if I should post photos or not!

Hopefully they are not as bad as the VN V8 tanks.. .one of them will set you back a min of $500.

Perhaps a fuel cell in the boot instead?

Are VN V8 tanks worth that much? Really? I have one in the shed, only reason it hasn’t gone to scrap yet is other stuff has been easier to reach so far! Will have to stick it on Gumtree. It is a leftover from an EFI conversion, came with the VP SS I wrecked for the driveline. Has straps and pump too. I scrapped everything else though, only this plus some EFI stuff I kept.

Yes they are.

The cool kids refer to them as "drop tanks".

What other worthless VN gear you got laying around you want to sell me?

All gone. Anything that wasn’t Holden went in the scrap bin, anything 6cyl or smaller than 5 litres went too. Sold most Torana stuff that I didn’t scrap, almost anything Commodore scrapped too. Only kept EFI stuff for conversions. I do have a bit of V2 stuff that were spared for my V2 I’ll sell when I get time, although have a mint pair of black V2 CV8 seats I’m keeping for my HK. There might be some NOS Commodore stuff floating around but mostly VB-VH, but it doesn’t take up any space.

Note, the straps for the IRS are different if you decide to advertise it.  The plastic protective covers are also sought after.

I'm guessing that's only the long range tank, not the standard one?

Correct mate, the larger V8 tanks only.

This tank came out of a VN V8. I pulled it out, it was at the same place the VP SS came from. I had the diff too, was a 3.08 LSD IIRC, I kept the axles and scrapped the housing and centre.

I'd gone to throw the sender unit straight into the bin a month or two ago, but for whatever reason I held onto it. Turns out replacement V8 sender units are bloody hard to find and damn expensive.

So last night I got out the white vinegar. I didn't have enough to submerge the whole unit so just brushed it on and repeated over a couple of hours. Then hit it with bi-carb soda to neutralise the acid and washed with water, then coated in WD40.....

It's actually completely come back to life!

Even the float arm is doing all the right things and working perfectly well.... I'm shocked.

The tank is similar - just absolutely caked in it. The stench is straight from the depths of hell!!

Again, at first I thought the tank was instant scrap metal - but I scratched away a bit of the rust with a screwdriver to reveal good looking metal underneath. I'm hopeful it can be saved. I'm having it opened up by the professionals to get full access and time will tell if it comes up or not. I'll report back on that once I find out.

You can do it yourself with a KBS kit.

Yeah I looked at the 3 step kits but didn’t commit. Opening the tank also means we can more easily check the swirl pot and run a new return line etc.

Kind of like these fuel tank bulkheads from efihardware....easy access next time might need to get into tank & makes connecting hose to swirl pot possible.

Especially if getting tank cut opened & cleaned may as well get one welded in.

**edit - link was meant to be for steel tank **

I’d consider one of these

https://www.efihardw...odore-vt-vy-mra

Fit an MRA from a VT 5litre car, avoid the external pump. Also allows you to have a good look inside the tank. You can put your arm through the hole and take pictures, or look in with a torch and mirror.

Here is the MRA:

https://www.efihardw...e-MRA-Fuel-Pump

It should drive the gauge too.

Ive just turned up some flanges to fit the Commodore V8 fuel pump into my project, Tojo The Toyota Tilt Tray.

Ive just got to drill and tap the holes to squeeze it down, then silver solder it in.

Nice little time consuming job.

Already soldered on the ULP fitting for the filler.

Might have to put up some pics one day and start a thread.

Cheers

Rob

Daniel - the stench hung around my garage for weeks too (I also spilt a tiny bit onto a dirt floor area) - I was truly stunned how long it took to finally ease. I couldn't co-exist with the tank or sender unit - I put them in the furthest corner of my quarter acre block to get some relief. It's like nothing I've ever experienced before. The combination of stale fuel with rust just does something unique.

I do like the idea of both the bulkhead and the MRA setups - duly noted.
