All injected 3.3 were Trimatic. But from memory the carby black 3.3 flywheel has the dowel so should fit? From memory these all used the bigger clutch plate and the holes for the pressure plate are further out. But a red 6 flywheel should fit if you drill the dowel hole, or remove the dowel. Someone like Dr Terry will probably know for certain.

Black flywheel have a different (bigger) pressure plate that probably wont fit in a red bellhousing.

Depends on what red bellhousing I think. From mid 1978 they were full cable clutch so it should be OK with those. Earlier ones may have an issue, in which case just use a red flywheel unless you are using the original EST off carby black 3.3.

If you’re fitting a red flywheel to a blue or black crank you probably want to get it lightened,no? Blue and black cranks being fully counterweighted, are substantially heavier than red I believe.

I think the flywheels are larger but they are not externally balanced from memory. If you were building a performance engine you’d balance it all, but if we are talking a relative stocker surely it’d be fine.

Thinking back I ran an m20 rat trap behind 3.3 blue with red flywheel about 1996 with no issues. A long time ago and only did about 200km to test the motor before rebuilding the bottom end and fitting a trimatic.

Also this:

You'll see in this pic that the holes are further apart. This means the PRESSURE PLATE is bigger and goes further back into the bellhousing.

This is where the problem lies.

So I had the research and development team do some work on this today.

They found an old race motor with a blue clutch still attached.

They bolted a red bellhousing on, there were problems with the bolts bottoming out, but here are their results.

The blue clutch won't fit in a red motor bellhousing as it is too big.

Here are some pics, the R&D team also found out that red and blue/black bellhousing bolts are different lengths. I tried to get pics but the flash didn't show the scraping.

Well, I got into the garage and checked. I have a blue motor going into hatch. I forget why but I have a red flywheel and clutch assy to fit to motor and go into red bellhousing and M20. I might get excited and get he whole lot balanced. But then again,I am only going to rev it to 5000-5500 so it probly won't need balancing.

Like I said, if running 202 blue black crank maybe get the red flywheel lightened to match original flywheel.
