Depends on the spec .

If it's a S (VB) poverty pack they are usually gal .

Upspec (VC / VD) are zinc . i.e shiny .

I don't think there is any rhyme or reason . Whatever they had in the parts bin on the day.

Holden and Belmont were a zinc/gal look and possibly just painted in some cases. Kingswood, Monaro, Kingswood SL, HX-HZ Sandman, GTS, Monaro LE and LS, Premier, Statesman, Statesman SL/E and Statesman Caprice were all chrome (bright). I would have thought Torana would be the same, ie the low spec car (S) would be zinc and SL, SL/R, SS and SL/E chrome. I'd have all the finish specs somewhere.

Scuff plates are bright zinc for all LH & LX 69 models.

That explains why there were no chrome Torana ones in my shed when I got rid of all Torana stuff! The last Torana ones I had were zinc hatchback ones, not sure what they were off.

All LH/LX 77 models have the same scuff plate part numbers. I didn't mention 77 models in my previous post as I did not know if they all had bright zinc or chrome.

Looks like they were all bright zinc like the 69 models.

These must have been off my LX SL hatchback as I put chrome ones in it. Not bright zinc though, just a dull grey look same as a Belmont.

All LH/LX 77 models have the same scuff plate part numbers.

That maybe the case, but there might have been a couple of different suppliers. From what I have seen over the years, I reckon there were both cad plated and zinc plated ones. The zinc ones in my car are still quite shiney.

Got me stuffed why I said all LH/LX 77 models. There were no LH 77 models. Oh the joys of growing older.

Yes, quite possible many parts that we might think were zinc plated were actually cadmium plated. Point is that no LH/LX Torana was fitted with chrome scuff plates.

I originally had my scuff plates cad plated and they turned black within a few months in storage whilst I was building the car. Had to send them away to get zinc’d.

Hi all  I have just removed mine and my guess is they are steel and painted with a zinc like paint, I started to clean up with a wire brush, paint comes off easy enough, I was going to just clean right back and undercoat and spray with a zinc finish, but after seeing Hanra's I might get zinc plated.

If you were doing again would you still zinc plate, just rang one place over phone estimate $240 for the four plates with a 7week turnaround.

Might go back to original idea of prime and paint.

If your restoring your car to original. Then yes I would re-zinc them. Will the car be finished within 7 weeks? If not, send them away now.

All of the scuff plates where bright zinc, or cadmimum based. Technically the should both give the same colour, but the brightner would have alterted the reflection. I can't plate anything that long, so i to will be chasing a shop in qld preferably to produce a finnish like brad had pictured. To me that's how they should look. You probably won't find anyone using cadmium now, because of how toxic it is.

I have over a hundred photos of brand new Toranas, and not one shows the scuff plates.

This one is unrestored, and it is hard to believe that it was ever bright.
