As we all know the hinges for the bonnet wear and then the back of the bonnet sick’s up.

ive been picked up by the scrutineers about it. Even though advised that there are no new ones nor other interchangeable from other models.

so I’m assuming they are repairable by getting the rivets changed but is there any advice as to where they can be repaired and by whom

thanks.

Aussie Muscle Car Parts sell repro LC LJ hinges. No idea what the quality is like though.

Hi, a few years back, i bought a set of oversize hinge pins from a swap meet , and repinned my own hinges. They work like new.

Even swaged them over, the same as they were originally.

So its definitely do-able. DIY

I think from memory the oversize was 9/16 or 14mm.

That was when repros, were not avail.

Whilst we're on the subject of bonnet hinges. I've seen some original ones that are galvanised and others that have appeared to be originally zinc plated? Is this correct or were they all galvanised. If both finishes were used what/when was the change over?

Hi James, I think they were galvanised originally but no-one does that style of galvanising anymore so zinc is the closest alternative. Todays galv is very thick and chunky and is more suited to steel beams.

Those garbage bin lids made for a good shield in a sword fight with my brothers or neighbors when I was a kid. You don't see that happening any more.

That 'old' galvanising is electroplated onto sheet steel. The other type of galvanising that Marty spoke of is Hot Dip Galvanising. Two very different processes.

The galvanised bonnet hinges, the components were stamped from Galv sheet steel.

Bonnet hinge components were also stamped from zinc plated steel.

The NOS bonnet hinges I bought for my LJ , one was Zinc plated the other was Galvanised so I painted both of them with Silver Epoxy paint.

Rarespares sell them too.

I had a good second hand set I had zinc plated, but would have purchased these if I didn't:

I have recently used the Resto Country ones. They seem good quality. Price is pretty sharp too.

I have a pair of bonnet hinges (not sure they have the springs with them) off a HK or HG Holden.

Good condition.

Not sure if they are same for LC or LJ or similar.

Anyway, if someone wants them, they are all yours for zero. Pick up Central Coast.

Cheers Dave

Need to sort out the bonnet hinges on my track LJ. Sticks up at the back about 20mm, scrutineers not happy.

Couple of questions please -

1 Why the hell doesn't the rear of the bonnet lower down, when you lower the hinges?

2. The refurb service by Speedex?...ok? price and turnaround?

3. Rares / Resto County ones OK quality?

4. Are LC/LJ same a Kingswood?

Thanks.

The bonnet will sit up at the back because possibly the pins are worn.

Not sure about Speedex ,but I purchased some re pinned re zinced hinges from Vinny’s (not fitted yet)quality looks very good.

I believe the rares ones are ok ,some modifications may be needed ,I think Marty had to grind something.

Kingswood ones different.

If you put the bonnet up fully ,and push it up slightly you can see movement in the pins if worn .Cheers Paul.

There was also a member on here that drilled out the pins, machined appropriate stainless bolts and fitted with nyloc nuts…

Hi its easily fixed, take off the bonnet hinges, then re drill the holes with the same drill hole bit top to bottom, you dont need to take off much, i think its called elongate, once u have done that put the bonnet hinges back on, the 2 bolts on each side just hand tight, then put the bonnet back on, the bonnet bolts again hand tight, close the bonnet then u can push the back ends of the bonnet down until u are satisfied  with it being flush with the guards, then u align the bonnet gaps with a wooden cloths peg, until u are satisfied with all the gaps, all you have to do is slowly lift up the bonnet half way, so u can tighten the hinge  bolts first and the bonnet bolts, i forgot to mention it will be easier if u remove the bonnet spring catch, that way u can close the bonnet easily if for some reason the back of the bonnet doesnt lower then you undo the hinge bolts hand tight lift the bonnet slowly as high as possible and do up the bolts, i have done this many times with used hinges with no issues  i hope this helps u

A Like for all of the above tips.  Thanks

I will give Paul's link, where you actually lift the bonnet , to drop the back ( assume it tilts the hinge ) is worth a go.

Will try it tomorrow.

I had drafted the following ,  before reading the tips...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The back of this bonnet sits up about 20mm. I suspect it was done as some sort of cold air type idea.

I did take the hinge assembly off, elongated the hinge to inner guard hole ( on the hinge ), so the hinge assembly could be pushed down further.

Refitted the bonnet.

No difference, even thought the elongation was a good 6 or 7mm?

Took them back off and looked for slop in the pivots....very minimal.

Ended up swapping them with a set off another LJ ( the bonnet sits properly on that car, so asume hinges are good )...even though there is at least the same amount of slop in the pivots ( minimal).

The 20mm gap on the problem car is now more like a good 10mm. The hinges can't be lowered any further.

I can't understand how the bonnet doesn't drop, when the hinges are dropped.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As noted, will try the other tips tomorrow.  Ta

Hi Col..No they wont because the plates that are inside the bonnet hinge brackets affixed to the guard have little tabs on the inside to keep those plates in place.you can see here its actually bottomed out too so wont go down no furtherAttached File  20220529_214637.jpg   540.06K   3 downloads
