Hi all I have a crack along the top of the muffler hanger on my VE Calais , I can use my work mig welder . What precautions should I take before welding this ? And where is the best place to earth it . I don’t want to potentially stuff up any electrics . Ta Paul.

Take it to an exhaust shop, be done in 2 minutes.

Me personally, I'd just attach the earth as close to the weld as possible and hit it... but I'm not tellin' you to do that 'cause I can't afford to replace your electronics!

I've heard that disconnecting the battery supposedly makes it safe® to weld but I don't really see what difference it makes, voltages and current can be induced into wiring etc. whether they're energised or not.

I have welded bits on my newest John Deere without disconnecting anything, and the computers on board are probably more complicated (with more sensors) than a VE. It even gives a live data feed back to J.D. in the U.S. I had them ring to tell me my right hand track adjuster was a bit loose while I was operating it.

Have the earth close.

Surge protector jumper leads are cheap. Buy a set and connect them to the battery.

Might come in handy for something else one day as well.

Same diode in them as a lot of purpose built surge arrestors for welding.

Just be careful of the moisture sensor of the tyres when you jump out for a squirt Shiney.

The one on the left is for guidance. The one on the right has about 30 pages to scroll through. You can see how much fuel each cylinder is using if you are bored.
