A quick check to see if the throttle blade position is about right, without adjusting anything, pull the carb and flip it over and check how much of the Transfer Slot is showing below the throttle blade, it shouldn't be any more than the width, should look like a square, or even a lil less, but no more. If it needs more air that's where holes in the throttle blades are required.

Normally, with the engine running, you should be able to see discharge from the Idle port, and the Transfer slot.

The reason for having the Transfer slot open slightly is it stops any stumbles from happening as the Transfer starts to initiate, its already flowing, so is a seamless change from Idle to Transfer.

Gaskets on the mixture screws? Baseplate Gasket to Body correct?

You said you had a Ford 2 barrel. Generally a Weber used on Holden 6's and far better than a 350 fuel funnel.

Carby came off my sons 65 mustang v8 for testing, but i had to put it back

Thanks for the ideas everyone, busy for the next week or so but will get back into it soon

A crappy or badly seated power valve gasket will allow fuel to leak through the threads
and straight into the manifold via the vacuum chamber behind it.
Especially with vacuum helping out
I have been playing with a crate of old holley parts i just aquired for 2 weeks
and have a 350 on my bench I am rebuilding right now.
Went out this morning and removed p.v. gasket, replaced p.v, sat metering block on
a coffee cup and filled it with wd40 around the spring plunger area.
It pissed through there easily.

Had a google out of curiosity and there are a lot of other forums talking about this
very thing that suggest a blown or badly gasketted p.v. will be a reason
for the engine being able to run with the mixture screws all the way in

Can't help but think that throttle blades open too much and exposing trans. slot
could richen things up to an eye-watering level but not flood your manifold.
The only other obvious place is the accelerator pump shooter gaskets leaking,
but you would have spotted that already

If the metering block to main body gasket was bad, and somehow letting fuel sneak
across into the idle passages, wouldn't the mixture screws still kill the engine?

Hope this is some help, good luck and keep us posted

I am keen to know what's going on

Is the gasket in there the same as the cork one in the picture?
The hole just above the big smiley shaped void in the centre
is for the accelerator pump passages
The black one will leave a lovely gap thick as the gasket
and dribble happily down behind the powervalve and into manifold.

Another thought, it's very easy to accidentally have 2 power valve
gaskets in place
