step 1- Go to the wreckers and get the rear section of a hand brake cable from a Commodore wagon, I grabbed mine from a VP wagon

step 2- fit the handbrake cable up so you get an idea of where its gonna sit.

step 3- make 2 brackets to hold the front ends of the cable outer to the floor, I made mine oyt of some 16mm ID pipe welded to some 3mm plate with a slot cut in the pipe to let me put the cable through

step 4- Put the brackets on the cable so you can mark out where they attach to the floor, I was too lazy weld them to the floor so I bolted them on so I didnt have to remove the carpet :spoton:

when its all mounted up it should look something like this

I really should have taken more pics before I took the car off the pit, I might chuck it back on sometime during the weeks and take some more pics

yep, the wagon cable is the key point in the whole thing though.

I had to do some stuff different with the return springs too because I deleted the dust shields cos they were bend and looked a bit dicky

Great idea makka, i ended up cutting the wire rope , then cut the front of the commodore outer sleeving the removing it from the cable, i then mated it to the torana front part of sleeving , so basically the rear commodore part matched the rear plates then the front part of the torana sleeving matched the original brackets . The two sleeves were are together using thick heat shrink which looks quite good. Then basically joined the length of wire rope from the right to the left side and crimped them together using a copper crimp lug and crimpers. Not your ordinary cable crimpers. Ill get a pic soon and post it so it will make sense.

^ makes perfect sence to me, that was basically my second option if the wagon brake didnt work.

Mark,
I just used the standard park brake, everything forward of the "T" piece is standard Torana, everything behind the "T" piece is Commodore

only mods i had to do was a few small changes to the bracket that holds the cable in the wheel end .... as i had the calipers on the front side of the diff (as shocks were too close on the back) i had to make my own hole for one of the bracket retaining bolts, so i used the caliper bolt for one and it pretty much just ment a bit of swapping parts from left to right etc to get it all sorted.

so the left of this pic is the rear of the car

Hi and thanks, always a great source of information on this site.

I have a 9 inch diff and am keen to change from drum to disc brakes which made me look at this post. The images do not show any exhaust system which give the appearance of plenty of space! Currently, I believe I have the stock handbrake (foot brake) cable although with the T5 gearbox and 9 inch assembly, it interferes across the tailshaft when on. Is this unique to the T5 or do others have this problem? Obviously this is not a problem as long as you come to a complete standstill before applying any handbrake.

I was also wondering if the exhaust was a problem at all when determining where to place the brackets that hold the Commodore rear cabling?

Cheers.
