If it was indeed termed as Holden's own "super light racer"... I can't see how a full interior, full steel, radio road going vehicle is "light".

This is the real story behind the SLR name.
My father worked at the GMH Woodville plant from 1967 until he retired early at age 55 in 1985. Dad being Spanish had many workmates from differing cultures.
He once told me the model code SLR was decided upon whilst he and his mates were having lunch one day. Apparently a guy named Sergio always ate Ravioli in his meal breaks, so they they took the S off Sergio's first name, the L came from Likes and finally the R from Ravioli.
I hope I have settled this argument once and for all

The SL/R5000 most certainly was raced and rallied. Allan Grice debuted the SL/R5000 at Amaroo Pk in 1974 in a 'demonstration run' (remember watching it on telly). It was then 1st raced at Oran Pk. M-HDT debuted their SL/R5000 at Surfers Paridise the same year. Colin Bond rallied the SL/R5000, L34 and A9X 4-door in the '70's.Hahha, but to the best of my knowledge the SL/R was never raced as such... They brought out the L34 and A9X for racing.... Ok im going to throw a spanner in the works in the Australian competition yearbook 1974 they class that the first racing 4 door as an SLR 5000 with L 34 options to prove it hardie ferodo 1000 1974 john goss first with a falcon wayne negas second jim richards third bondy forth brocky 118 laps oil pump failure they were all driving SLR.in 1975 they were all L 34 thats what the year book states.sorry about the histoy lesson

As I said, the 'demo' run was on April 14th at Amaroo Pk.
The 1st competitive outing was 2 weeks later @ the 5th round of the ATCC at Oran Pk, qualified 4th behind Moffat, Brock and Morris (both in XU-1's), finished 14th (last).
The next meeting was May 19th at Surfers and Brock debuted M-HDT's SLR along with Grice. Brock started from pole and won the race. Grice qualified 4th and was running 4th until the engine threw a rod due to oil surge.
The final round of the ATCC was at AIR on June 9th. Again Brock took pole and had a flag-flag victory.
During this period both the M-HDT and Craven Mild cars competed in various non-championship events.
The L34's debuted in the 1974 ManChamp series at the 'Chesterfield 250' at AIR (can't find date, but I think Aug, as Sandown is Sept, Bathurst Oct, etc). The five round ManChamp was won by Holden (3 wins, a 4th and a 10th, all wins by Bond).

Yes. The SL/R5000's were stuck with the 'standard' L31 V8. GM-H did not allow Firth to use the already developed V8 out of the XU-1 V8 program. They also used the XU-1's 13" wheels to try and stop breakages in the driveline.Thanks Gino. This is all very interesting stuff

sorry to drag this up but just to clear it up a rifle has rifleing to make the bullet fly straight and a gun doesn'tI'm pretty certain HE called it a rifle but I don't know the difference as i'm not much into that sort of thing! i always thought guns are guns.

OK thanks sorry for the confusion re guns rifles etc. Dad explained the difference to me and i get it now.I am just not into guns i am more into cars.
