I always liked a HQ triple core radiator with Mondo twin fan shroud set up. Never got hot even on a 40 degree day cruising around Summernats.

Give your local radiator service a yell. Stick with copper/brass in my opinion. If you have the original one get it recored with a redback radiators CT core. I'm a radiator surgeon of 26yrs & we predominantly use these cores for automotive performance type stuff. The tubes 16mm in width and are 8.4mm apart across the width of the core compared to the usual 10-12mm. You end up with more tubes which equals better efficiency and the core is not as thick which gives better air flow. For electric fans you can't beat spal. 😊

Are the HQ radiators easy to find or is there an aftermarket version?

There are a bazillion aftermarket ones available at many different price points.

Mondeo and Saab 9-5 fans are an exact size fit on a HQ size radiator.

I've had a fair few of these in cars I've wrecked, worked fine just looked a bit ugly where the spouts had been blanked but perfectly functional. Normally I just went out and found proper SBC examples and got them re-cored though.

Kirk not a hard job at all just have to swap fittings opposite sides and enlarge bottom outlet. When we do it you won't even know it's been done yel327. I know what you mean some shops just whack a patch over it and it looks crap but we take the time & effort to do it properly 😃

Tony, the straps are different on LH LX, you have to cut the rear flange from the HQ strap or cut the lip on the Rail to fit into Torana.

I run a Browns radiator in my cammed LS Torana https://www.brownsradiators.com.au/

I am sure you will have someone local though, local is usually better if they are making it over ordering it in

Mick in OZ that's news to me mate! Only time you need to cut them is fitting a V8 radiator to a six chassis! HQ 6cyl radiator is different height to a LC LJ 6cyl radiator and different sidebands. You won't fit a 6cyl HQ-HZ radiator height wise in a LC LJ. Original post was asking about 308 radiator.

HQ-HZ have different mounting faces to HK-HG and LH-LX. LH-LX fits very much like HK-HG. Ivan post up photos if you like.

Yes 6cyl radiators are different I know that. Wide sidebands HQ narrow HG etc all taller than a LC LJ 6cyl radiator. V8 are all one & same height & width HQ-HZ LH-LX. Original post was asking for 308 radiator not 6cyl.

Outside bands are different. I was only talking about V8.

This radiator was in my shop last week it's out of a HZ V8 and it's exactly the same type of aftermarket radiator a close friend has in a genuine L34 Which came in for a cleanout three weeks ago and it fits without cutting sidebands. The other pic is a screenshot from a supplier website showing they fit all HQ-LX V8.Attached File  IMAG3051~2.jpg   294.91K   7 downloadsAttached File  Screenshot_20210411-104844_1.png   297.21K   5 downloads

Anyway to conclude, we have started to steer clear of the after market radiator assemblies even from our long time good quality suppliers as inevitably it's all coming from China in varying quality. Hence my original comment above about giving your local shop a job and recoring with an Aussie made top quality core or building a new one with same. There are lots of us old school radiator surgeons out there that give a shit about your machine & can build radiators not just replace them! Cheers guys!

Not correct. The bands are different. Put them side by side and you'll see.

The HQ-HZ strap has the mounting on the rear for the shroud, the LH-LX don't, the mounting for the shroud fouls with the metalwork for the fronts of the rails. I got caught with this buying a new radiator that wouldn't fit and the radiator shop confirmed that was the case. Size and shape is the same, front mounting is the same.

Well, that's my experience anyway.

Front mounting is different too. Torana is flat like HK-HG. HQ-HZ has stepped bits where the mounting holes are to push the radiator rear wards about 5mm or so.
