Got a mate who is building a twin turbo 427 XB Falcon Sedan and he has what he believed was a VL steering rack. However he has found that the pinion is only splined half way around the shaft???

He has to try and mate that rack to the standard colum shift XB Falcon colum.

Is anyone familiar with this rack? Is it normal? From what I can tell its a VL Power Steering Rack????

Actually I just remembered the mounting tabs are further apart on VN onwards too. Where it attaches to the column is definitely the same though.

Not true.

They are essentially the same racks, with only one small difference. Same length, same mounts, same connections to pump. In fact the last 6 months of VL production used VN-style racks. VN front track is the same as VB-VL.

The only real difference is the location of the left/right pipes at the valve. They moved them to clear the right hand VN V6 exhaust pipe.

VP is the same rack again, with a different input shaft, which was square.

hanra, there should be enough VNs in wrecking yards for you to obtain a clamp.

You're right Dr Terry -

I had to check some old pics as I was sure I was right, turns out it was a VK I was thinking of - I had to cut off and move the k-frame brackets further out to fit a VN rack in it, as the mounts were different.

I'm was sure the front track was wider too, maybe thinking of VR? or I'm getting old - VN is definitely wider in the rear...

Correct, the VB-VK was a TRW unit which had different mounts to the VL.

VL-VN-VP racks are the same length, but the VR-VS are longer due to the widened track on those models.

VN-VP have a wider rear track. Interestingly VR-VS have a wider rear track than VN-VP, but for sedan only. VR-VS wagons & utes still have the VN-VP rear track.

The plastic cross-over tube became steel 6 months before the end of VL production.

The VR-VS main shaft is also slightly longer (2 or 3mm from memory).

What do you mean by "double D" ?

The only "angle" that changed on the VL head was the position of the left/right tubes.

Shaft profile has two opposing flats, like a D with two uprights.

I've never looked at the square shaft being a "double D", now I understand.

I disagree about any difference in the head angle, the pinion & main shaft are the same parts with the same part numbers, how can the angle change ?
