LC Drum front end

Got the opportunity to buy a mates LC of him, Its stock 161, 4 speed with Drums up front, all the LC/LJ's I've driven were disc fronts so i have no idea what these stop like

 

Eventually i would like to beef the 161 up, nothing crazy, just lumpy cam, head work to accommodate that, 350 Holley or 38 Weber and extractors.

 

Will the drums slow this thing down or should i upgrade?

 

Are there any kits that supply everything or do i have to chase down stub axles and what ever else?

S/H disc front ends are on Gumtree regularly for sensible money. Easy upgrade for a noticeable improvement.

It'll work, but you wouldn't regret a swap to discs if you enjoy driving.

Old-school-wise, drums actually stop better than discs because the shoes are self-energising (if the last guy installed them the right way around that is). That means that the rotation of the drum tends to pull the brake shoe in tighter against it as pressure is applied.

 

A disc brake requires more pressure to generate the same braking effect because they aren't self energising. That's why most of the old four-wheel-drum setups weren't vacuum boosted and most disc brake setups are. (If you've ever been towed in a four-wheel-disc equipped car then you'll know what happens when the booster vacuum runs out!)

 

However, disc brakes win out in every other area... better heat dissipation, simpler construction, less / easier maintenance, no adjustment needed, and better driver control over the braking effect generally.

Castlemaine rod shop still do the disc conversion using those drum stubs if you want.

Otherwise easy straight swap to lc/j discs. Don't have to swap whole front end just stubs and brake gear.

Otherwise all the hoppers upgrades available just need any torana disc stubs lc to uc to do hoppers upgrades.

Changes to master cylinder and rear wheel cylinders from memory too.

As above buy a set of stubs and just buy brand new rotors and pads 

get a set hand set of callipers  recon 

pretty much all you need 

 

No idea which would be the cheapest option
