As mentioned earlier, with the low oil pressure came vibration and the 12 month old balancer started to move.

Posted Image

As XU1 balancer retainers are hard to come by, I thought I'd have a go at making one on a budget.
This is a VK 3.3 power steering / airconditioning pulley that has had one and a half "V's" machined off. This came with the motor.

Posted Image

I used the coarsest grit emery I could find to remove the paint and key the surfaces then bolted them together.

Posted Image

I drilled 6 holes around the cavity with a 5.5mm drill to inject the 252 Sikaflex and also to help with curing. I squirted until I could see the Sika passing the holes and I could also see it squishing out through the tape.

Posted Image
Posted Image

A bit of a clean up.

Posted Image
Posted Image

10mm thickness takes 6 days to cure, this is 8mm thick in the cavity. It also engages the balancer rubber so hopefully that cant slip backwards. The original balancer (see early posts) walked backwards and scraped the timing cover.

252 can handle 150 degrees C for 1 hr, it's working temp is 90 degrees C so I reckon it will be O.K?

This is off the pamphlet:"High strength structural adhesive.Sikaflex 252 is suitable for bonding joints which are subject to a high degree of mechanical stress (Shock, vibration, sudden impact)."

A tube of this goop cost $23 at Bunnings and there is enough to do 4 - 5 balancers.

Anyone want to buy the rest of the tube?

Update:
Working on the sump at the moment. The original sump had a baffle in it but this baffle has 5mm gaps around it so was virtually useless. :<_<:

Posted Image

So it was chopped out. :D

Posted Image

Then a bit of this............

Posted Image

Turned into this............

Posted Image

And will end up looking something like this............

Posted Image

Currently working on the baffle, more pics to come, next race next Sunday 26th (maybe )

Longitudinal forces from braking/accellerating making the gate close and open appropriately and seal the majority of the oil in one area. But I thought the gate would face the other way...

Do you want it for braking, not accellerating right? And the pickup sits on our side of the gate in the photos, right?

I think I'm confused

More just a matter of oil flowing toward the pickup but not away, isn't it? I think the photo hides the steep angle of the sump on the near side that the oil would have to climb up, the far side would be much easier for it to climb thus the trap door...?

it's a commodore so the pickup is in the middle bit right?

so it would be keeping oil at the pickup?

Pics are taken from the back, looking towards the front. Commodore pans are at the front.
The trap door opens toward the rear and shuts against the baffle.
The pick-up is just rearward of the door. The door only opens about 15mm and is stopped by the pick-up.

As I brake, the trap door shuts and any oil rear of the baffle comes forward and is trapped in front of the pick-up.

Then as I accelerate out of the corner, the oil trapped in front of the baffle, moves back and opens the trap door again and the level stabilises.

The plates along the side restrict the amount of oil traveling up the sides during cornering.

Well that's the plan anyway

Next day out is the Sunday Matty, if all goes to plan.

Yes, but, Mick, this isn't a crappy old 202. :spit: It's a 3.3! :spoton:
And, as it turns out, the head is a 2850 high comp head (ported, blue printed and balanced no doubt) which explains why it blew the doors off a few V8's at Heathcote.
Also it's +.060" :spoton: :spoton: :spoton: (makes all the difference )

Seriously Mick, I think you will be in deep trouble next time we meet on the track.
