Just wondering if the LJ has a ceramic ballast resistor like many other cars of the era have. I've bought a new coil and wonder where to wire in the ballast resistor wire...

Download your own wiring diagram for the lj
It shows a wire that has the resistance going from the starter switch to the coil, not sure what colour its supposed to be! as well as the yell start wire.

The resistive wire on my LJ was pink. I think it also has writing on it from memory saying resistance or something.

So it is just a wire I see. I'm used to a ceramic block being used for resistance rather than a wire. Thanks for the tip.

I hope you haven't missed the point here. The pink wire IS A RESISTOR.
If you put another resistor on the pink wire, you will have incorrect voltage (too low) at your coil.
Maybe I missed your point? Have you replaced the wire from the ignition switch to the coil with plain wire?

This is the wire to a standard coil. The printing says: "RESISTOR DO NOT CUT"

Yeah appreciate the follow up rodomo - I was just replacing the coil and dizzy parts and was looking for the resistor when connecting everything back up, because the ignition coil still requires a resistor. I had just never worked on a car that didn't have the ceramic block type resistor...although I did find a thin black wire just hanging off the -ve terminal of the coil connected to nothing (the fast resistor wire was there too). I just threw the extra wire over the shoulder as I couldn't think if where it could connect. (I'll post a few pics when I resize and upload them).

Might once have had a compressor on the end of it, or it was there as a ignition cut out.

Here a big pic showing the wire - the wire was broken at the other end too. No idea why it was there - car works without it though.

Your photo, doesnt match your description.
It shows a broken blue(not black) wire coming from the +ve of the coil......it appears that the lower terminal(in the picture) has the (-) marking.

Indeed your nick is appropriate devilsadvocate - you are correct. Off the +ve terminal and it is a blue wire - when I first looked at it through the oil it was black....never changed my mind on the colour.

Still don't know what it was doing there....

^, could have been a wire to trigger a relay for anything that should only work when the ignition is on, fans.....
perhaps car was wired with coil back to front and is still cut off wire
connection of capacitor across +ve and ground
.......no it shouldnt be needed as part of any factory function.

Oh yeah I understand now - because that terminal has IGN switch on it...I'll have a look around in the engine bay for something it might have connected to. The only difference from factory I've notice in the car is an aftermarket temperature gauge....I'll have a look.

Thanks again for the advice - the internet has made working on cars just that little bit easier.
