This is probably going to be fairly controversial thread and I'm sure there will be many differing opinions on how many were made and exactly what specifications constitutes a 72 Bathurst XU1. The problem is that there are not many original untouched examples still around. Also Holdens main concern was to homologate the new parts in time for Bathurst 72 (and it's not unusual for them to fudge the numbers), they weren't interested in how they did it they just had to convince Cams that the cars had been produced.
The only obvious difference between the 72 Bathurst and earlier LJ XU1s is the fitment of the Sprint Master wheels, all the other changes like springs, wheel spacers, flywheel and engine mods are a bit less obvious to the naked eye.
It would be great if we could actually find some documentation from GMH that gave us a VIN when the Bathurst run started and ended at both the Brisbane and Adelaide plants.
It's been said that the changes (except for the sprint master wheels) made for Bathurst 72 were carried over into the rest of the LJ production run. Have any of the members on this forum who own/owned post 72 Bathurst XU1s pulled down the engine and found the same cam and flywheel as the 72 Bathurst cars have and how many untouched original cars with five Sprint Master mags have you seen?
I know I'm probably stirring up a Hornet's nest but I'm really interested in finding more information about these cars.

[29/8/1972 it says C.A.M.S recognizes updated LJ model GTR XU-1 model for a minimum run of 200 units.New heavy duty springs,light flywheel,new camshaft "HX" and an optional 3.55:1 final drive ratio.]
Not entirely sure if this means they started building on or before this date or just that c.a.m.s have just recognized the fact they will be built on or after this date.
My car has a 3.55:1 ratio lsd diff in it,unfortunatley it definatley not what you would call an untouched car as cylinder head is missing,I dont think it has a lightened flywheel,not sure about springs or how to tell the difference,has a lumpy cam although I doubt it would the original one.

i know they have diffrent cams, xu-1 bathurst cam is along lumpier than a xu-1 cam. dunno about the part numbers tho... i guess they would be diffrent as they are diffrent parts???? otherwise how would they know what cam they are putting in a car ( when building it) or what cam to put in it ( when holden serviced it)?????didn't it have a different camshaft grind, but still shared the same part number?

Maybe thats it ????????????????????? Adelaide built 72 Bathurst cars are 8th and 9th month cars as Brocky,s and Bondy,s Bathurst 72 cars were finished on Thursday 3-8-72. My pink thing was finished on Friday 4-8-72 and is an Adelaide build and just added $50,000 to its value ( ha ha ).
Maybe Brisbane built Bathurst 72 cars began 29-8-72 ? That would also make Adelaide built 72 Bathurst cars an XU-2 shell. GMH had already had 200 sets of XU-2 stickers made. Im sure the 200 shells would,nt have been far away either ! Until that terrible day ( The supercar scare of 72 ) but thats another story !

Why would that make the Adelaide Bathurst cars V8 XU-1 shells? By the time these cars went down the production line the V8 XU-1 was well and truly dead, these shells were no different to normal XU-1s.That would also make Adelaide built 72 Bathurst cars an XU-2 shell. I'd like to know how many of the XU-1s that people suspect are Bathurst cars have 5 SprintMaster wheels of the right vintage? I've seen only a handful that have. Most people don't know how the SprintMaster mounts in the boot. The right wheel nuts are also something to look for as the Holden ones are a different size to after market ones.
I also wonder whether the minimum 200 identical cars would have been made by GMH?

I reed some where else the 200 V8 lj.s were going to be built at the Adelaide plant but Australian Muscle Car Magazine reconds they were going to be built at the Brisbane plant. Acording to AMC they were only 2 weeks away from production when the whole thing was canned due to the supercar scare !
My head hurts and im feeling a little dizzy !

gmh should have had a different prefix on the block like JK or something like that.
Their would be a homologated engine number list but god know who has it now.

Forgot to mention that if you own a 7th, 8th or 9th month BRISBANE built car i,d be checking to see if it has any oddities under it like dual exhaust bracketery etc. They produced 251 LJ GTR XU-1,s in the months of July, August and September 200 of which may have been designated for the V8 XU-2 program that never got under way. Thats an 80% chance you may just own one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
