Hi all. I recently saw an article in a magazine which showed a blue h'back A9X. For the life of me I have been trying to get a copy of the magazine. Something to do with Aussie muscle cars or racing cars?? Anyway, I was flicking through it when I saw the article on the A9X. The owner said it had factory or dealer fitted A/C. When I looked at the pictures of the engine bay I saw the A/C compressor on the left side of the car, with an idler wheel fitted just infront of the L/H cylinder head. But what got me what that the car didn't have a bulky air box / condensor where the heater fan sits in the engine bay. I saw that the compressor had the hoses fitted and they led into the cabin. Now my question is this, has any one out there seen this type of A/C system. Any info would be appreciated.

Sounds like it's an under the dash unit. My SL/R had one fitted and the condenser was encased and mounted underneath the dash on the passanger side.

The A9X was not available with factory fitted A/C so the dealers had to fit it pre delivery, there are a few different types used depending on the dealership. They all have an under dash unit (that differ depending on which unit is used) that replaces the fresh air vents located in the centre under dash.

Yes, its possible that the fact system could have been installed later by the dealer, however, as a guestimate would need to allow at least day of labour to fit it(dont know if the box can be got in and out without at least unbolting or removing the v8 engine ).....whereas an underdash unit( consisting of the blower and evaporator) could be installed in a couple of hours. This is assuming that the dealers were able to buy the whole kit of gm...or perhaps they ordered other reg cars with air to strip..........imagine fact air option was possible even more expensive than getting aftermarket air fitted at the time........and having a dealer's whole day labour charge on top of it would have made a very expensive option.
Does anyone have a brochure listing optional equipment prices, or were they only given on application?

I know the car, and I believe he does come for a look and post here on ocassion. It's dealer fitted air, not the factory type. Most was contracted to an aircon place down the road from the dealer .

Hey guys, cant say that the few A9X's I've seen with air were factory fitted, but pretty sure my LH has factory air and it doesn't have your normal heater box. It is bigger than your normal heater box.
What colour blue was the A9X hatch in the magazine? anyone

G'day Mick & Crew!! Yes that's my car in Just Holdens & the car definately has dealer air. THe compressor is a Clarion unit.....same manufacturer as the stereos & has a Mark 4 underdash unit.
It is amazing that writers don't listen when they interview you......it's definately NOT factory air as none were....few more probs with the story too!! anyway.... My car has the best underdash panel in Australia......Mick will agree!!!
Xu1 L34 A9x is that your car in your avatar? Mick have you found any more Atlantis hatches other than Mine & Laurie's old car?
Cheers

Hi pete, there are only 2 atlantis hatches made from memory (don't have the list on me). Looking good mate. I know what you mean, they make stuff up as they go, thats why I like when Mark Ostler does a story, he listens to what you say to him.

would love to see a pic of the under dash unit. cause you can buy all the under bonnet stuff new and heaps of different types of under dash units. just would like to see what type they used.
anybody got pics of under dash units in a torana, apart from the standard uc type.
we fit them at work, just never fitted one into a torana.

What do you mean by the standard UC type?
This is an Posted Image unit fitted to a UC, it is a markIV unit, have no idea if this was installed by a dealer, arranged by a dealer or fitted some time after by an aircon place......unless there is paper work from the dealer can't see that you would know. I don't believe there was an underdash unit of choice used, a few fit the bill, this is one of them. For the markiv to fit in, quite a bit of the plenum snorkel has to be fitted as well as removing material from the front of the heater box.
I have a another underdash unit, a repco cooldrive that is in our othr uc that fits directly under the glovebox without any cutting, however, it is much chunkier and takes up even more precious knee room for the front passenger

Tony has one Pete has one. Tony's is the one that the Canberra club member owned, Petes came from a QLD A9X member.

Here's what the A/C for the A9X looks like, once again it's dealer fitted with a GMH part number and on the under dash unit it says GM air.

A9X air

A9X air 2

Hope those links work.

Im sure reda9x will have the part number(which is?) if it exists. Yes have seen that unit b4, from memory the one I saw had something that looked like the holden lion badge on it but wasnt quite the holden lion.
If it was all GM supplied, why wouldnt they use the a6 harrison/frigidaire (not what is in pic) compressor........they will work with cycling systems. The pic doesnt show the condensor fitted either.......is it the same as the fact item?

I'll have a look for the number, but most of these were fitted by air con specialists, not the dealers themselves and no 2 are 100% the same. Those units were very common at the time not only in Toranas. The condensor is fitted in front of the radiator, and it's different to the factory item. The factory hoses run over the RHS radiator support (allowing a fatory system to be completely removed without losing any gas) while this one goes through the RSP on the left. The original thermo fan has been removed and 2 circuit type (factory air type) fans fitted to cope, but I've seen dealer fitted items where the radiator was spaced back with a 4 cylinder radiator spacer to fit 2 standard A9X fans.

How can you tell if its a factory condensor or not from the pic?......could have been installed upside down it the hoses are on the other side, or maybe the UC condensor, not sure if they are the same and just inverted.
Just putting on my interior decorator hat here.....how many different shades of brown(at least 7) are happening in that interior of that a9x pic? Is that factory? Sorry, used to the consistency of colour used in the UC

As RED said they tend to all be different.

Mine replaces the elbow on the passenger side and flows out the middle factory vents.

Very compact.

I was told it is Mark 4, the rest looks as per after market.

How can tell, simple, I know both of the cars in the pictures first hand. Uc condensor is different to LX. As for the trim in Micks car, it's not 7 different shades, it's very consistant, and I would certainly say it is the best A9X for sale at the moment, and probably the best sedan to have come up for sale in the last few years. You are looking at a car that has shadows on the trim in the photo, not clear photo at that.
