I should've thought to ask this here sooner.

I've seen old brochures on Ebay that mention V8 Bedford vans used by HDT. Discussion on the Bedford forum leads me to believe there were 5 of these built by the factory, 2 of them for HDT. Does anyone here remember or know anything about these.

There musty have been more than 5 built, my uncle had a 308 powered campervan in the late 70's and when i worked for CIG straight out of school, there was a 308 powered LWB van there used as a mobile repair van.

It's something I have never really looked into, but I will now the question has been asked, I'll add it to the list I have. Chris Bowden may know something on these too.

Heres a link to an HDT Bedford transporter photo in 1978. This ran a hot HDT 308 so Im told. Is there much interest in old transporters from the Group C era?

Bedfords came standard with 253 or 308 around 1979/80. These were the bigger trucks (not the CF's). The 253's were a low comp engine prefixed BS and ran a carby like a 307 2 barrel rochester but with a governor under the carby. They were also TH pattern 253's. The 308's were a unique low comp engine prefixed BV also running a 2 barrel. As far as I know they were blue engines with HEI dizzys.

You are right about the two barrell carby and govenor and yes they had the electronic dissy.
Moter specs were low comp. with l34 rods so they could be revved, not sure about bolt pattern.
Were they pantech or open transporters and dual high or banana back.

They are cool rigs though bedford's!

Does anyone know anything (history etc) about the transporter in the pic above ^^^? Apparently it was supplied as a cab/chassis and the body built by HDT onto it?

They were all cab chassis, just like HQ-WB and VY-VZ tonners. Also like CF Bedford trucks etc. The only Holden utes/trucks with removable back I know of that you could ever buy with a well back were Rodeos and C20/K20. You buy the cab and chassis and organise your own back (or have the Holden dealer get one for you eg Alcan alloy tray).

Came across this topic while searching for something else. I have a book written by a bloke named Matt Phillip who worked at Firth Motors during it's HDT hay day. He got onto the topic of vans they used to tow the race cars. He mentions a CF Bedford van the team had in the early seventies and how they modified it to take a 202 6 cylinder engine and auto trans with 350 Monaro brakes on the front. The team had nick named it the jolly greeen giant. No mention of them being V8 equiped.
The only other HDT V8 Beford information I have info was a J3 model pantech truck that the dealer team had used at one stage. Some info appeared in an article in Australian Muscle Car magazine back in 2007 in an article about a rallycross HT 350 Monaro. There was a shot of Monaro and Beford in the article. Sound like the Bedford was a bit of a wild ride.

HDT may well have then done the prototype CF Bedford with Holden 6cyl for GMH! These had Vauxhall engines until the mid 70's when they got fitted with 173 and then later 202. Boxes were Holden 3spd, 4spd and trimatic.

Yes, trucks and busses. Only on Bedford though. ALL other 253's were trimatic pattern.
