Portland grey metallic.

Finding some-one who has the numbers and getting the right colour is the hard part. I had some mixed at AutoBarn and I am happy enough with the colour even if it's a little different.

Or get the pros like Dash Original to restore it.

Yes, getting the right colour is the hard part.
I am having a play ATM. I have found the following issues.
1. The dashes were never painted originally so finding the exact paint code may never be possible.
2. The shades of Portland grey vary from the factory, to the extent that many cars have multi-shaded components from new. Some of the early ones are quite silver where as the later ones are much more grey and the WB Holden ones use a similar shade.
3. When spraying the paint on the amount of pressure in the gun can affect how the silver pigment settles.
4. Masking it up so it looks as per original is very time consuming. If you have the money get it professionally done.
5. It is very difficult to colour match

Therefore it almost comes down to personal choice as to what you want the dash to look like rather than an off the shelf colour. My first attempt I obtained Portland Grey from GMH. The colour is acceptable but not what I want. I have not tried the autobahn shade. I am now using some paint colour matched from an original dash that I like (late model).
The first test patch was still too silver. I took it back for rematching but havent used it yet. I am also about to get a sample pot of another code from the old forum. I figure the dash is something worth getting right in terms of how you want it.

Some-one (yonks ago) posted on the old forum about the SS dash colour. Being a good little vegemite I wrote it down on a piece of paper and found it.

Numbers are

Dulux Paint Code
577-15870
Group 1 metallic

Is another starting point and I can't be sure that I wrote them down are right.

Thats the code next on my list :D From previous inquiries it is a wheel colour so i have left it till last. However there is a possibility it could be what im after. I have had a close look at the SS wheel trims and they are a shade of silver in the centre and silver grey between the spokes. There is a remote posssiblity that the silver grey between the spokes is the same. They look pretty close

yes that colour is for the wheel trims SS and SLR, not the correct dash colour. It's a hard process to replicate and I know Dash Original charges around $600 to do it, and the ones I have seen are easy to pick.

I used a volvo colour from a paint rack years ago! It was pretty close. The masking was a bloody nightmare, not $400 bucks worth of nightmare though!

Hi all, silly question, are you guys removing the dash to paint or doing it in the car ?

Also, how do you get the heater control markings back after you paint over them ?

Any prep work I should know about, like sanding, plastic primers etc, mine is an LX SL Woodgrain.

Cheers

Rob

SS and SLR wheel trims are the same colour all over, there is no difference in the spokes. The paint colour for these is Bezel Grey Metalic.

I wonder what Dash Original charge to do the dash these days,I would call them but am overseas at the moment.Has anyone asked them lately how much they charge?.
Also seen someone asking about whether the woodgrain dashes can be sprayed silver a while back but can't seem to find the post. What do you guys reckon?Would it be possible to get a woodgrain dash done as a silver SLR dash?.

You could paint one, people have done it before, the problem is, your paint will react with the woodgrain and years of armour all that has soaked into the dash. Last I heard dash original charged over $400. You have to supply the dash, and effectivly for $400 you get the silver bits repainted and the dash heater control stencils redone. They do not redo the chrome edging. You can always pick one thats been redone because the dashes were never originally sprayed, and dash original I have noticed do a few things wrong.

Thanks guys, thought I ask as original silver dashes are getting pretty big money for them and most of them need a resto anyways so I thought if I buy a cheap woodgrain one and get it redone by Dash Original in silver I would save myself a lot of dollars.

Dash Original told me they could convert a woodgrain dash to silver SS for the same cost as restoring a silver dash. They can also replace the radio pocket if you supply the pocket from another dash for around $50.

I matched the colour with sign writing adhesive vinyl and simply applied it over the original contours, trimming the excess away with a scalpel. looks schmicko!!
