I worked on the Hydro (HEC) When the Franklin Dam was getting built,in the HEC Kitchen, and in 1983-1988 we used to do trips to Tullah every now and then, at the Tullah HEC Kitchen,Now one of the chefs there owned a Barbados Green L34 Torana with Hotwire Mags,it had a very hot motor in it,he took me for a Quick lap in it up the Big long Strait before u turn into where the HEC Camp is,im sure he was from Hobart the Chef.
The HEC stopped Dam Building in 1994,so the chef would of took it back to hobart, its the Only Barbados Green L34 i have ever seen here.

I thought it had Hotwires painted in Black, but i think it had these Black rebel mags on it now, here a pic of the Green Machine that the HEC Chef owned :)

Just did a online Tassy rego check on this Barbados Green L34 and its still rego in Tassy, its a 1974 Model LH Torana, and its Engine Number starts with HZ, Colour is Green.
So its a L34 Engine, i wonder if the Chef from the Hydro Tullah Kitchen still owns it.

that l34 looks like the one thats been owned by the same man since the 70s?, he did drag it doing 13.4 or so on slicks, it did have rebels on it at one stage, he still has it here.
GO5000 did a 11.71 qtr in 1989 with nitrous, and a best 12.4 with no gas.

DId you see GO 5000 race then? I never did myself but I heard a lot of hype on how it was one of the fastest toranas in Tassie..
It had a pretty stock engine in it the last time i saw it. Do you know if it was a L34?

Yes I did see it race every time it ran, It wasnt an L34 Dtrain, it had a lot of money spent on the whole car, engine was around the 6k mark back then, it had 370hp at flywheel and 60 extra with the gas. Barry Merrick and Chev offroad built the motor in various setups, couldnt keep clutches in it though as it was driven on the road all the time as well, lots of hype yes, but it did the numbers, a close friend sent it in to a magazine and the story was edited a bit and was a laugh at the time, still have the mag and vhs tapes of the drags, it pulled the front wheel off the deck with 4.56s diff at one stage. It was in a few shows here as well after it was totally rebuilt in 1989. it was top qualifier in street class a few times and won state street v8 title in 1989(2nd in 1988),. best 11.71 until a very fast datsun and black xygt came along, spending more to go faster seemed pointless and i didnt want to go to an auto. great fun days.

Hi, ci0308 and reda9x. In a way you are both correct about the red a9x from tassy. I bought the car in 1990 and have been doing some research on it.
Attached File  Torana inTassy.jpg   102.26K   9 downloads
So just thought i'd add some details here for any one interested. The torana concerned in this thread was the third of Garry's group c a9x's.The first car i don't know if it had any race history before Garry or not, but he had been very competitivein an escort sports sedan and with the backing of long time supporter Greater Pacific Finance decided to also compete in group c.His first torana started the 78 season with a red and white paint scheme, then blue and green were added to the bonnet and tailgate.Attached File  img012.jpg   96.57K   4 downloads
Later blue and green stripes were added down the sides. He had some good results in the championship and south pacific touring car series with the odd DNF. Garry started to make plans for Bathurst but could not get an entry. He did a deal with Bob Jane to buy his beautifully presented 77 Jane/Pete Geoghegan car
Attached File  DSCN1390.jpg   109.16K   4 downloads
which came with a Bathurst entry and Big Pete as co driver, their race didn't go to wellthough ending on lap 29 with Pete coasting into the pits with no oil pressure(i think the oil filter came loose).Garry ran the rest of 78 and the first half of 79 with a changeto the paint scheme.
Attached File  img006.jpg   139.16K   4 downloads
He had some good resultsbut also had some engine problems. He was contemplating his future in group c when contacted by Ian Tate with an offer to bo his engines, the in July 79 in an Amscar round at Amaroo Park the car was destroyed when it hit a wall side on due to a brake failure
Attached File  Garry Rogers Amaroo 79.jpg   44.55K   5 downloads
Garry went back to racing his first car for the short term but with Bathurst looming he bought an unused spare shell from John Sheppard at HDT that was in HDT colours, this was confirmed by Paul Bowman(Timaru NZ) who worked for Garry and Bob Stevens who was to co drive with Garry at Bathurst. Paul and the team transferred anything that could be saved into the new shell and to save time some of the new colours were masked straight off the HDT colours hence the vee in the green on the bonnet. The car was finished just in time with bob fitting the diff ratio needed at the Bathurst Holden dealership, the log book was issued on the 21-9-79 and the race was on the 30-9-79.
Attached File  DSCF1375.JPG   130.11K   11 downloads
Starting from 6th on the grid they were having a trouble free run till 30 to 40 laps to go the car ran out of front brakes. Garry was able to maintain the gaps to the 4th and 6th positioned cars to bring it home for a well earned 5th. Laps of Bathurst at speed with poor brakes would not be easy. Paul tells me he still has a front brake pad backing plate with caliper pistons embedded in it.
