Hi You don't appear to have had a response.

Probably because royal purple is a very rare colour on a 1972 GTR or XU-1 and not
many pictures around.
I have seen one XU-1 in that colour in Melb. in the past 30 + years !! and that
was at Sandown Historic races in Oct. 2000 - entered in the regularity event by
well known Vic. Group Nc competitor Graham Slater.

My description of the colour - Very dark shade of purple - straight non-metallic
- very much like the queen's robes in that common portrait photo and that's probably
why they named it royal purple.

If you PM HG350 she may be able to tell you how many XU-1s were produced in that
colour - it certainly wont be many.

Cheers J R.

Hi

This car is listed as being Royal Purple on the Aussie Muscle Car Collection site. It is an LC but Royal Purple doesn't seem to be an LC colour. The colour certainly looks regal.

Wingnut - is this the colour that you recall?

Thanks guys, we have ordered a sample of the color to check it out, I was really hoping to see what the color looks like on the cars, we will take ours back to this colour, when we get to that stage. (have been saying that for years) Finally now we are in our own business we will be able to work on it if times are quite.

Bazza

That pic. with sunlight on the side panels suggests that it is a metallic / irridescent
colour. Maybe my memory has faded a bit like the colour !!

The colour I recall is dark like the bonnet and roof in the pic.
As far as I know royal purple was only a 1972 ( LJ ) colour - not LC.

I know its a matter of personal taste and originality, but dark colours on XU-1s
don't look all that flash because there is insufficient contrast with the blackouts.

However in my opinion you wouldn't be doing the car justice or maximising its value potential if you restored it and didn't paint it in its original colour.

Cheers JR.

Hi

It will be interesting to compare it with the sample ordered by Noteabull.

Noteabull - What prefix appears before the 13890 on the trim plate?

Bazza, trim plate reads paint 5681 3890

A9X, would like to see some pics.

Wingnut, I tend to agree about the colours, but would like to see it back in the original colour.

Hi,

Here are some pics of our LJ GTR which according to the paint code is Royal Purple. The first pic is probably the most true to colour but as you can see from the other pics, at different angles it looks different in colour. We also have only heard of one other Royal Purple LJ. We have had the car for a couple of years and bought if from a guy who had owned it for 19 years. Hope this helps you to make your decision whether or not to paint it the original colour.

Cheers Loui

cool, thanks for the pics, seems not to dark & not to light, would be good to see the colour on a car in the flesh, would be good to find out roughly how many were made in this colour, I will have to email hg350 to see what I can find out.

Yes - The third pic of Loui's car in shadow is the royal purple I remember.
Direct sunlight certainly gives different perspectives to that colour - It looks
great in subdued light - of course the panels have to be perfect because the
dark colour accentuates any ripples or imperfections.

Orange LJ Congratulations on your car - must have taken considerable effort
to get those panels looking like that - air conditioned too !!!.
