i fitted a complete drivers pillar on my lc, pretty fiddly job but well worth it in the end.

Its amazing how much rust is hidding behind those in fill panels. If you have a bubble of rust appearing at the top of guard windscreen area or a spot around hinge you can almost guarantee it will be bad behind that panel.

I had a 4dr sl which looked immaculant until i unpicked the guards - different story then.

oooo yeah the front door pillars.
I drowned mine in por15 and SW2, zinc rich weld thru primer and welded it on, both front door pillars are done like this, along with the sills

on the front pillar there is an outer skin which you can see and an inner.
If you remove the front pillar you can cut the top section off under/near the front wind screen then unpick the welds down along the pillar and cut along the bottom near the sill panel. Good chance you may have to replace the sill panel, fingers crossed you dont.

I've just completed the L/H A pillar, the gaps and alignment around the door are spot on. also completed 95% of the R/H A pillar.
The doner car had been rust proofed which was a bonus.
I removed the hole pillar from the roof down, big job.
I will post some more pics tonight

Hi GTR161s
I was going to fill the holes then respot weld the guard back on. The R/H side still had the original spot welds on it before i removed it.

Now this was a shock to find so much rust in the A pillars. After the outer skin came off i couldn't stop here I would always know what was underneath so this is what i did next :gun:

Cut it out leaving only the kick panel which had surface rust :spoton:

Did it move much when you lopped that corner out?

At least you'll get the chance to rectify the problems the GMH factory couldn't be bothered with in the first place!!!! ie. Rustproofing and Paint on inners

The door had dropped because of the rust so i spent a lot of time setting it up, i would suggest u set it up on a jig if u try this. Yes it will move. i did a lot of mock fit ups before i fully welded it. Both L/H R/H A pillars had original rust proofing on the inside, it was from a 4cyl 2 dr. I need to go in to shed now as i've had the gas heater in the shed running for 2hrs while i've been here. shoud i post some more pic's???

I made up an inside sleeve for the top of the pillar and then welded the top of the pillar. it took a lot of measuring, adjusting and mock up before i got it right.
I also replaced the inner sill panels up to the the position of the first seat bolt after this pic.
