There has been another thread about dealer stickers a long time ago.
Someone posted a link to a mob that are doing repo's if my memory is right.

I also Googled it earlier. This Gilbert fella looks to of had his fingers in a few different pies.
The only reference to a dealership was "wholesale" (but the link wouldn't open) and Sutton's (may have bought him out?) Pacific Hwy Hornsby

hi i got a 1/70 gtr. so i guess it counts it out as being a bathurst xu1. i think it was you that i got onto regarding this being an ex cop car. from your info a few things match up, that suggests it is an ex copper.
Just a quick question while i think of it...how do i find out my original engine number? it doesn't appear on the disc. is there a way of finding it out?
thanks

John A Gilbert was located at Pacific Hwy Waitara (next to Hornsby) &
Cnr of Ross st and Parramatta Rd Camperdown.

I was an apprentice at Camperdown when the GTRs came out.
Part of my job for a while was to fit the number plates with Frames,
and rear window stickers, to every car being delivered.

If I close my eyes, I can still see that sticker.
It's a pity I can't draw for nuts.

I would think that the 2 dealerships would have had different dealer numbers.
I think Camperdown was #29

The Police cars mostly went though Camperdown

At Waitara they used to do a LC Torana "Stinger"
It was an 2 door S dressed like a GTR-XU1.
It was to allow a way through the insurance costs of the GTRs and XU1s
The front guards and rear spoiler wore a caricature of an angry bee,
similar to the Super Roos on the Fords.

One of the Waitara staff (pretty sure) was Trevor Hodge.
He used to race a plumdinger one in open Club events.

Now, That would be an interesting car to find.

John.

Hi John.

I believe also that the John A Gilbert parts warehouse at Silverwater Rd, Silverwater also had its own dealer number.

I know Camperdown (Glebe) was closed in the late 70s, but Waitara & Silverwater were purchased & renamed by Suttons. These 2 numbers would probably be the same today.

Oh how i wish you could draw!!! Just so I know what i'd be looking for. But I would love to be able to get my hands on a copy of the sticker!
Camperdown was 029, coz that is the dealer code where mine was sold thru.
Thanks for that info too, i found it very interesting. :spoton:

I'd be interested in having a look at the window sticker.
In the time I was with the company it changed twice.

When I started at Camperdown,
some of the stickers were reverse printed and applied to the inside of the rear window.
The writing was freshened up a little and they were then applied to the outside of the glass.

During the time I did the LCs and HGs I used to apply the stickers to
the left lower corner or the centre of the window.

About 1972 they changed to a modern (in those days) period type of writing.
White writing on a blue base
May have been yellow on blue. I'm not sure.
You can barely see one of these on the pictured car.
John.

LCGTR1970,
As far as I know the 161 and 173 GTRs were standard.
The LJ GTR was also standard.
Wasn't until the '73 Bathurst XU1 was released that they had this car desguised as a GTR.
Others say the police had XU1s before the these, But I don't recall any until late 73.
However I can't be sure.
Here is a link to this subject previously.
Most of it is explained and will get me out of typing. Which I'm not very good at.
John.

Bit of a dead thread revival but I found the best photo i could of a late 70's John A Gilberts sticker on a VB commo sold from Camperdown. My LX was sold from Camperdown originally but has a different dealer sticker on rear window, probably when it was eventually sold as a used car. Cant remember which one it is, rockdale somewhere, ill have to have a look.

John A. GILBERT PTY. LTD., |

** one of the four Sydney metropolitan"! distributors of Holden vehicles, will 1 join the Stock Exchange list soon,. A small issue of five shilling shares at par has been arranged privately to give the necessary spread of capital.

At the same time, there is a whisper that W. T. Coggins Pty. Ltd., another of the four Holden distributors in Sydney, may be preparing to join the list.

That would leave only two distributors-Stack and Co. Pty. Ltd. and W. H. Lober and Co. Pty. Ltd. - as private companies. Much interest will be directed towards their future.

Stack and Co. has for years been the subject of rumours which came to nothing.

Now it seems that General Motors - Holden's has no objection in principle to the public flotation of its     distributors.

About two months ago an Adelaide distributor of Holdens - Freeman Motors Ltd.-joined the after a placement of five-shilling shares at 12/9 each. Freeman Motors was on S a 30 per cent, dividend, and  had an attractive profit  record. With the proposed expansion of G.M.-H. output from  200 Holdens a day to 300.» and with the long waiting list for these vehicles, the prospect for the distributors  still looks expansive.

In addition, John A Gilbert is extending strong  into the used-car trade. On Parramatta Road,  Fivedock, the company base just opened the first of a proposed chain of used-car showrooms.

The idea is to bring tone and perhaps more reliability to the used-car business.   Several companies like Pacific Motors have already been taking used cars out of the suburban backyard and  vacant-allotment category.
