I would like to know roughly what horsepower the ordinary LJ XU1s would put out at the rear wheels.
Or a healthy modified 202.
what would be considered as good horsepower.
Thanks, John.

John, aim for 200@ the tyres. If you get 180 and it is reliable then leave it at that.

I just bought a G-TECH PRO RR and will be very interested to see what HP my red is putting out. My guess was around 170-180 so its interesting to see that this is the figure given above.

Will hopefully arrive in the next few days and I'll give it a test next weekend.

An estimate flywheel HP that I've calculated from my 1/4 mile times is about 240-260 FWHP.

You might get 200 ( ) from a healthy 202 using one of those 'optimistic' type dynos

Mate, When we talk a "healthy" 202 were talking 10 grand + worth here. 200 @ the rear is very obtainable.

82911 talks real dyno's not optimistic ones.

Cheers.

I thought a good road 202 would get maybe 180 to 190.
Does anyone know what a stock 72 XU1 is likely to get?
Just trying to gauge performance difference in relation to horsepower.
As Craig A knows, his car has a much quicker 1/4 time than a stock XU1.
Would be interested in the RWHP
John.

John, try this calculator, and use the factory/published 1/4 mile times. Not an exact science, but pretty close.

HP Calculator

In the calculator I use a weight of 2580 pounds, equivalent to 1170 kilograms = factory 1070kgs car + 100kgs allowance for driver & fluids.

Using the published 16.1 second 1/4 mile time for an LC XU1 the calculator indicates around 122 RWHP (factory published is 160HP FWHP).

LJ XU1 times can be inserted into the calculator and it will provide reasonably accurate estimates. If you use 14.9 seconds, RWHP comes up as 155 so matches what GTR-XU1 has said above.

Hope that helps.

I had my LJ XU1 tuned and dynoed back in 93. it made 150 rwhp but was a little lean up top so i fitted a holley blue electric pump. yes its got its factory JP and H252 head, carbs and dizzy however it did have extractors and 2.5 exhaust

the motor in my gtr made 120rkw (160.92hp) i am hoping to up that with a new head and carvy combo) new heavly ported and decked 9 port head and triple webbers (the old combo had triple 1.75 stromburgs)

you have actually had a ride in a gtr with that same motor loneOranger

well i have your average street motor with 140hp at the wheels, all up to build a motor like this is about $3000-4000 depending where you start and how much you can do yourself.

it started out with a 350 holley and then eventually went to VK EFI, it probably gained 5hp from the EFI but i reckon if you spent the time on the rollers you could get the same out of a carby setup ... maybe even more with webers or the like.

the gtr-xu1 club of wa had a dyno day years ago, they dynoed about 6 std xu1s, a dead std 72 lj xu1 puts out around 120hp@ wheels on a dyno dynamics dyno. 200@wheels is a very very strong 6cyl which will be a fair bit more modified than an xu1 spec motor.

At our club dyno they were flat out doing 120 RWHP, more like 90 RWHP.

^^^That's right. Some 'not unhealthy' triple webber-fed motors were doing 135.

And of course he uses a good dyno, Bomber...everyone does...that's why no-one ever argues about horse power figures...much :D

Hi Milco,
Was that GTR the orange car that I drove?
It had the CDs.
Felt good. if it had 160 RWHP, I'd be happy with that.

It's always hard to tell by just driving them.
John.

the 173 in my LJ sedan put out a stonking 67kw/89hp at the rears when i put it on the rollers at a datsun dyno day last year. And yes you can feel the raw power that it doesn't have - especially considering its only got an exhaust w/extractors and its auto with a 3.08:1 diff ratio LOL.

Received my G-TECH yesterday and tested on my Mazda SP-23.

Factory rates this car at 117FWKW's, G-TECH measured 87.7KW at the wheels. If you use the driveline loss calculation of around 25% then G-TECH reports 110kws, reasonably close to the factory spec.

Measured 400m time was 16.553 seconds, 0-100 times was 9.25 (NRMA tests 16.7/9.5).

I'll get the XU-1 out on the weekend and see what it comes up with.

John, happy to let you use it to measure your cars output, if you want to do this send me a P.M and we'll arrange something.

My mate works for speedworks in Ringwood.

They got 307hp out of a 202 for a LJ race car. That is flywheel horsepower. And that motor cost lots and lots of $$$

I think they are building another at the moment, and they reckon they can flow the heads a little bit better and make over 310fwhp.

So if you have the cash. Anything is possible...

if thats to me heath. I'm pretty sure he said it was N/A with Triples. I can find out though if you want. It was for Group C racing i think. So it had to be like that i think.

I'm happy with the way my car drives and performs.
It would be nice to know the horsepower that equates to that happiness.
John.
