Hi,
A guy who raced Toranas a lot over here in NZ was a fella called Rod Coppins. He had a crack at bathurst I believe as well, although I don't know how he got on. He used to own my car and because of that I was doing a bit of research and found these old pics of the Toranas that he raced. I just thought someone else out there may appreciate them as well as me.
There is a LC XU1, a L34 and an A9X. (well I assume they are as why would you race the non-performance versions?) Also who can tell me what the front car is in the first pic? Is that a Monza?

Rod Coppins ran at Bathurst 1974, 75 and 77, with fellow Kiwi Jim Richards on each occassion.
1974 Torana L34 DNF
1975 Torana L34 DNF
1977 Falcon GT DNF

Looks like a Monza in the first photo, great shots,

Coppins and Richards managed better than DNFs in 1974 and 75

In 74 they qualified 8th and finished 3rd overall
In 75 they again qualified 8th and finished 8th overall

Bit of a quote from Bill Tuckey:
"In one of the wettest, more treacherous and most dramatic races of Bathurst history Jim and Rod Coppins bought their breakless Southern Comfort L34 home in an amazing third behind the winning Goss/Kevin Bartlett Falcon and the Bob Forbes/Wayne Negus Torana"

Mental note: In April 2008 an aussie complemented a kiwi on his sporting ability! :D

Seriously though Rory, do you think that could have something to do with the fact its always raining here? :<_<:

From memory, that was the last outing for the HDT A9X and it's Richards at the wheel. Or is it Jimmy in the Monza, something like that anyway

This pic was taken in 2015. Owner drove the car from Canterbury in the South Island up to Auckland then back again.

The last record on Carjam was 2013 hence why I stated 2013. Do you have a photo of the engine number in it?

Great old photos. I seemed to remember a few Monza's racing back in the day. There where quite a few in the sports sedans which raced under group B regs. Pretty sure I remember going to a race in Melbourne with Alan Moffat racing behind the wheel of a Monza.

Enter any kiwi number plate and it brings up the history of the car, bloody fantastic, a shame we don't have it here.

Try it out with the plate in the original pic.

Carjam.co.nz

The cars I brought over 7 or 8 years sago is still on there!

Would be good to see. I've only seen one in the flesh 20+ years ago, and have no record of it other than memory.

The picture of the   LC XU1  at he start of the thread is probably being driven by Jim Palmer  .  A friend of mine owns this car and lives at Ashburton  .   He said that he  had bought the car and one day he was reading  a  NZ  classic car magazine and there was an article  about  motor racing at Bay Park and a picture  showing a torana leading a race . Obviously in road trim still complete with number plates he said he saw the plate and thought   * where the hell  have  l seen that number plate before  * , and then it dawned on him after a while  that it was on the  XU1 that he had not long bought  !
